Adrian Nicholls denied
Adrian Nicholls was denied the chance of a
final winner before retiring from the saddle after
Surewecan was withdrawn at Catterick
Nicholls was due to sign off aboard the Mark
Johnston-trained runner in the Scoop6 Results At
totepoolliveinfo.com Handicap but the horse was
declared a non-runner due to the going.
The popular jockey has been one of the leading
riders on the northern circuit for a number of
years, enjoying big-race success aboard the likes
of Strike Up The Band, Fire Up The Band and Tax
Free, all high-class sprinters trained by his father,
He tasted Group One glory for the first time
when riding Regal Parade in the 2009 Sprint Cup
at Haydock, before striking at the top level once
more aboard the same horse in the Prix Maurice
de Gheest at Deauville the following summer.
Nicholls admits the decision to hang up his
saddle is not an easy one, but having failed to
ride a winner in 2016, he feels the time is right to
start a new career.
He said: "It's something I've been thinking
about for a while, but there's never an easy time
to do it.
"It's not that I particularly want to retire, but
there's been a lack of opportunities and nobody
wants to pay to go to work.
"At the start of the season I thought I'd give it
another go and then every week I've just been
putting it off.
"Me and my wife Clare have a livery business
and I've also been working at the Northern
Racing College as an instructor. I just felt now
was the right time to stop riding while I'm still
young enough to do something else.
O'Neill in hospital
Apprentice Ger O'Neill has been taken to Hull
Royal Infirmary as a precaution after taking a fall
shortly after the line in a 10-furlong contest at
The 7lb claimer was unshipped from Mysterial
after finishing third behind King Of The Celts in
the adview.co.uk Cup Handicap.
"He's been taken to hospital for precautionary
examination," said clerk of the course Sally
"He had a brief loss of consciousness, but when
he left the racecourse he was conscious and
The following race was delayed by 15 minutes
until emergency services were back in position at
the East Yorkshire track.
Quiet Reflection was a hugely impressive
winner of the 188Bet Sandy Lane Stakes at
Karl Burke's charge was sent off at odds of 7-1
in a race expected to be dominated by the likes of
Gifted Master and Buratino.
Gifted Master duly set out to make all, setting
a decent gallop closely tracked by Gracious John
with Buratino also sitting handy in fourth.
In contrast, Dougie Costello dropped Quiet
Reflection in behind, waiting for the perfect
moment to push on as the race began in earnest.
Buratino was one of the first to challenge
Gifted Master, with Donjuan Triumphant also
kicking again on the run to the line, but neither
could match the finish of Quiet Reflection.
Costello produced her inside the final furlong
and when he gave the signal, she readily pushed
on to notch a three-and-three-quarter-length win
over Donjuan Triumphant.
Academy Award and Emile Ramsammy
inflicted the first defeat on The Gatsby in
the first jewel of local racing s Triple
Crown , the Guineas two months ago. This
time around Merlin Samlalsingh will again
be leading in the winner of the second
jewel of the Triple Crown- the Carib Brew-
ery Midsummer Classic over 1900 metres
on the main track at Santa Rosa Park,
After suffering the heart-breaking defeat,
The Gatsby has trained like a champion for
the feature event on Indian Arrival Day and
looks a racing certainty . Some say he is
tied by the post, while others say, Horse
make to beat horse.
Former champion jockey Ramsammy, will
be aboard Back Onyx for trainer Stephen
Jardim in the feature Grade One event on
Monday, and must be hoping for miracle
to snatch this event.
Ramsammy was aboard Academy Award
when the colt snatch the Guineas on the
line from The Gatsby, but on this occasion
will not be in the line up.
Merlin Samlalsingh would have been
thinking about writing his name into the
record books, as having been the first owner
to have his horses finish 1-2 in the Triple
Crown Series, after Academy Award and
The Gatsby battled to line in the first classic
of the series.
All turfites, racegoers and punters are
anticipating a great battle for the honours
when the races fires off, but that did not
materialise as Academy Award, which is
unbeaten, is not in the field of ten West
Indian-bred three-year-olds for the
This clearly, opened the path for a romp
from The Gatsby, which before his defeat
had won his first four career starts by 34
Clearly, there is nothing in the field to
amuse The Gatsby and should he not win
by ten lengths then something is amiss. The
opposition is sub-standard and nothing
should make The Gatsby and Prayven Badrie
come out of second gear. The $150,000
cheque should have already been mailed to
owner Merlin Samlalsingh.
The form book shows Tiger s Eye finished
28 lengths behind The Gatsby on debut in
the St James Stakes on Boxing Day (Decem-
ber 26) but has come back to win a maiden.
Black Onyx which will be ridden by Ram-
sammy was beaten 30 lengths in the same
race, so he will have to sprout wings to get
War Brigade is still a maiden and has
shown precious little for anyone to think
of him as a classic contender.
The Harold Cahdee trained Mafia Man
showed some improvement last time out
when turning in his maiden certificate and
the Barbadian --bred gelding needs to
improve further to have a say in this event.
Champion trainer John O Brien has three-
pronged attack in this event and Mint Con-
dition would carry his hope of stopping The
Gatsby. Mint Condition has won both the
Trial Stakes and "Royal Colours" and also
has a victory over two turns and could
improve upon his sixth-placed effort in the
Guineas. He could finish in the money while
pushing the field.
Champion trainer O Brien will also be
represented by Magical Victory in the feature
event at 4.40 p.m.
Meet The 'Great'
Gatsby on Carib day
champion, Rico Walcott, stormed to three
wins at Northlands Park on Friday, to
come within reach of the lead in the jock-
The 27-year-old s start to the new sea-
son had been a sluggish one but he upped
the ante with wins with Rosila in race two,
Officer Kira in race three and Smokin Babe
in race four, to move to 11 wins.
He is now just one off fellow Barbadian
and six-time former champion Quincy
Welch, who was winless on the day.
Jamaican Dane Nelson, also winless on
Friday, lies third on nine wins.
Walcott opened his account over 6-1/2
furlongs when he guided favourite Rosila
to a dominant eight-length victory over
the three-year-olds and upward which
have never won two races.
He stalked with the four-year-old filly
from third before getting past leaders
Haythorne Place and Magic Run along the
rails and reaching the finish without a
Walcott followed up with a gate-to-
wire effort, partnering with four-year-old
bay filly Officer Kira to slam the three-
year-old maiden fillies and mares by five
lengths, over 6-1/2 furlongs.
The favourite led early, was challenged
at the quarter pole by Pades Royal Baby
but drew off to control the stretch run.
Walcott s win in race four was equally
as dominant as he and the Smokin Babe
came late to beat the three-year-old and
upward maiden fillies and mares by two
In a six furlong trip, Summer Exploration
and Pure T N T duelled through the half-
mile before Walcott rallied the three-year-
old filly to haul in the leaders and win
WINNIPEG---Former champion Chris
Husbands rode a double and fellow Bar-
badian Renaldo Cumberbatch matched
him with another, as they dominated the
seven-race card at Assiniboia Downs on
The 2014 champion Husbands captured
race one with 2-1 chance Forever Victory
and returned in race three to blow away
the field with favourite Safecracker.
Not to be left out, Cumberbatch posted
wins in race four with odds-on bet Sierra
Delta and in the day s final race with
another favourite Floating River.
With his latest success, Husbands moved
to 12 wins for the new season, two clear
of Barbadian rookie Antonio Whitehall
who scored just once on Friday with
favourite Dance Affair in race five.
Cumberbatch sits down the standings
with three winners.
Husbands got started when he produced
a front-running effort with three-year-
old chestnut gelding Forever Victory to
beat the three-year-old and upward maid-
ens by 1-3/4 lengths going 5-1/2 furlongs.
Walcott shines with triple to hone in on lead
The Gatsby in full flight.
Barbadian Rico Walcott ... shone with a
triple at Northlands.
