Knight thriving in Chicago
Roger Charlton is pleased with reports of
Decorated Knight's wellbeing ahead of
Saturday's Arlington Million in Chicago.
The regally-bred four-year-old has won two of
his last three starts, including the Meld Stakes
at Leopardstown last time.
The trainer told his website,
www.rogercharlton.com: "Decorated Knight has
settled in very well at Arlington for the Million
"His regular work rider says he feels great, and
he has not left any food since he arrived. All the
tweets from the local journalists show him
rolling on the grass, if he is not eating it, which is
his little party trick."
Tryster, Mondialiste and Deauville are set to
form the rest of a strong British and Irish raiding
party for Saturday's big race.
Sky Bet have installed Mondialiste and Tryster
as their 4/1 joint-favourites.
The Leeds firm then bet: 5/1 Deauville; 6/1
Decorated Knight; 7/1 World Approval; 10/1 The
Pizza Man; 12s bar.
Hit It A Bomb out to fire
Long-absent Breeders' Cup hero Hit It A Bomb
puts his unbeaten record on the line in the
Invesco Pension Consultants Desmond Stakes at
Leopardstown this evening.
The War Front colt won a Curragh maiden and
a Listed prize at Dundalk before completing a
hat-trick in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf at
Keeneland in October.
Aidan O'Brien's charge makes his belated
three-year-old debut at Group Three level and
faces seven opponents.
"He's in good form and is just ready to start,"
"It took a bit of time to get him back fit but
he's in good order."
The master of Ballydoyle also saddles last
year's winner Cougar Mountain and General
Tribal Beat, trained by Jim Bolger, is another
returning from a long absence.
The sole British representative in the field is
Custom Cut, who won this prize in 2014 for
David O'Meara and has since won again at
Leopardstown in last season's Boomerang
Stakes. He has yet to score this term, but has
run well in defeat on his two most recent starts,
in the Diomed at Epsom and the Summer Mile
at Ascot. Tracey Collins saddles all-weather
specialist Captain Joy, with Niall Moran's Dont
Bother Me and the David Marnane-trained
Elleval completing the line-up.
Payne loses Penzance ride
Michelle Payne gained international
recognition when riding Prince Of Penzance to a
shock victory in the Emirates Melbourne Cup
last year but she will not be in the plate for the
gelding's next run.
Payne has been sidelined with a serious injury
since May which caused her to miss last
weekend's Shergar Cup at Ascot but had
recently returned to riding work.
Earlier this month Prince Of Penzance's co-
owner John Richards said the ride was hers from
their point-of-view, but that the final decision
rested with trainer Darren Weir.
However, yesterday Richards broke the news
that Payne would not be on board when the
seven-year-old returns at Caulfield at the end of
this month, telling www.racing.com: "The horse
will be running in the Memsie Stakes and she
won't be riding.
"That is the major reason, that she is not race
fit and we have concerns over her wellbeing."
Payne vented her frustration on Twitter before
subsequently deleting the post.
