Home' Trinidad and Tobago Guardian : August 17th 2016 Contents Tobago is not known as a world rated surfing location
however if you are a holiday visitor you can easily go
surfing. One of the enjoyable aspects of including surf-
ing as part of your Tobago vacation is that the beaches
suitable for surfing are not far for the popular hotel ac-
The best location for surfing in Tobago is at Mount
Irvine beach. Here you will probably find someone surfing
on the beach every day, although that may be the only
person surfing on the beach. Mount Irvine is very rarely
ever crowded during the week although the number of
persons increases on a weekend. At Mount Irvine the
waves break right on an offshore coral reef on the north
eastern section of the bay. Both long and short boarders
enjoy the curl of the wave here. An enjoyable feature of
Mount Irvine is that when you are not surfing you can
grab a quick bite to eat or drink at Surfer's Restaurant
which is just on the shore. There are changing rooms and
toilets at the Beach facility and cabanas scattered around
the grounds. The almond trees at the edge of the beach
create an ideal location for watching the sunset at the
end of the day.
Just to the south of Mount Irvine is Old Grange Beach.
For most of the year, the water is very flat but at certain
times of the year the waves rise tremendously, creating a
To the north of Bacolet Point is Minister Bay and this
bay is almost certain to provide surfing action, especially
if the waves at Mount Irvine are too small to ride.
While Tobago may not be world rated for surfing, when
it comes to windsurfing and kite surfing, Tobago is a
world ranked destination. It is considered an ideal location
for basic level and intermediate level windsurfers. For sev-
eral years the Test Team from Boards Magazine has used
Tobago to test new models of wind surfing boards. Part
of the reason for Tobago's popularity as a wind and kite
surfing vacation spot is that winds of 10-15 knots blow al-
most every day and in June go up to 25 knots. When cou-
pled with water that is amazingly blue you have a great
windsurfing holiday destination. The main windsurfing
season is from the middle of December through to July.
However, don't let that deter you from surfing at other
times of the year.
The premier location for windsurfing in Tobago is at Pi-
geon Point. Here you find white sand beaches with grace-
ful coconut trees and clear water that allows you to see
straight to the bottom, all protected by an offshore coral
reef that results in the water being very flat. The Buccoo
Reef has resulted in a large blue tropical lagoon that al-
lows you to surf for miles across the water. Board rentals
are easily available at Pigeon Point and there are bars,
shops, changing rooms, showers and toilets throughout
the beach area.
For adding variety in your windsurfing, Little Rockly Bay
which is backed by the Tobago Plantations Villa develop-
ment provides another location for windsurfing. Lined
with coconut palms and a consistent onshore breeze, this
bay has moderate surf of around 3 feet that is good for
kite surfers and provides some wave action for wind
