L ast weekend saw a mix of culture with a
varied assortment of events. The weekend
began as early as 4 am when CAL
Invaders Steel Orchestra staged its second Republic
Day Steelband Traditional J Ouvert Experience along
Tragarete Road, Woodbrook. This event was inci-
dent free as hundreds of revellers made a circuit
around the Queen s Park Oval costumed in tradi-
tional J Ouvert wear.
The J Ouvert exclusively played steelband music by
PCS Nitrogen Silver Stars, CAL Invaders, MHTL Star-
lift, Phase II in collaboration with Hadco, Brimblers,
St James Tripolians and Woodbrook Modernaires.
Massy Trinidad All Stars was unfortunately a no-
show for the after-J Ouvert party in Queen s Park
Oval Carpark as the Duke Street band was also
already booked to perform at the Republic Day of
Prayers being held simultaneously at the Queen s Park
The Republic Day holiday weekend also included a
bumper 75th birthday celebration for Black Stalin.
The five-time National Calypso Monarch, who suf-
fered a stroke last year, was serenaded by several of
his colleagues at the Southern Academy for the Per-
forming Arts, San Fernando. The production was
appropriately themed Celebration of the Life and
Music of the Black Stalin.
Also in the southland, La Brea s Sr Paul Clarke
Outreach Centre in New Lands was completely trans-
formed into a stunning concert space for The Home-
coming Two, headlined by homegirl Vaughnette Big-
ford and her band. This show also featured John Jon
and Ken "Professor" Philmore.
There was a large turnout of young people at Trini
Revellers Saturday night launch of Al Zawaj---Wed-
ding under the Arabian Skies.
This weekend will be no different with a steelband
street parade and show planned for tomorrow by First
Citizens Supernovas Steel Orchestra. In association
with Pan Trinbago Inc, the popular Surrey Village,
Lopinot steelband will host Reaching Souls, featuring
ten top steelbands and four gospel orchestras along
Macoya Main Road to the Eddie Hart Grounds,
This event is scheduled to begin at 2 pm.
Theatre is also big tomorrow as the Princes Town
Theatre Workshop (PTTW) stages Seeta Persad s
acclaimed Parosin---the Lady Next Door at Gaston
The play begins at 6.30 pm.
Tomorrow s entertainment agenda also includes
Gary Cordner Live & Direct in White at Kaiso Blues

do, Culture at its Best is being staged by Friends of

from 7 pm.
Trini Arabs in the wedding
On Sunday, September 18, Rugeri Promotions
launched its presentation for Carnival 2017---Al Trini

Trini Revellers will be presenting Al Zawaj---Wed-
ding under the Arabian Skies and Rugeri will repre-
sent the Trinidad contingent invited to the wedding.
Rugeri Promotions has been in existence since
2006 when it presented the popular section Antho-
ny and Cleopatra in the band Rome the Empire
and, from the costumes presented at their launch,
can be expected to have another successful season.
The national colours of red, white and black are
featured in the design and in order to incorporate
some form of Arabic culture, the hijab can be seen
forming part of the female costume and the tradi-
tional Arabic headdress is worn by the men.
