Solange, Assang prevail at Catch tennis
Solange Skeene and Yin Lee
Assang progressed to the third
round in the Under-16 Girls
Division of the Catch National
Junior Tennis Championship at
the Racket Centre in Tacarigua
yesterday and could be on a col-
lision course later this week.
Both had contrasting sec-
ond-round competition under
sweltering hot sun, with Assang the
top U-16 player getting the better
of a Maria Honore in straight sets
6-3, 6-1 on court five, while Skeene
had to come from a set down 5-7 to
defeat her counterpart in the other
two sets 6-1, 6-2 on the stadium
court against a determined Jade
Skeene who at the age of 13, raised
eyebrows of her ability as a senior
player when she clobbered num-
ber one seed Emma Davis and then
Anya King at the Shell Tranquil-
ity Tennis Open recently, got her
campaign off to a strong start by
disposing of Emily Lawrence.
But yesterday a determined Tom
Yew forced her to make errors, as
she claimed the first set 7-5.
But there was no stopping the
hard-hitting Skeene who battled
back on the state-of-the art ten-
nis facility to level the scores with
a 6-1 triumph and then clobbering
her counterpart 6-2 in the third set
Victoria Koylass also made her
presence felt among the U-16s
when she defeated Adele Stowe 6-2,
6-0 to join other winners on the
day, such as Osenyonye Nwokolo
who prevailed over Aralia Blackman
6-1, 6-0; Lily Lanser over Jacinda
Austin 6-0, 6-0 and Abigail Jones
who triumphed over Vivian Sabga in
two sets 6-1, 6-1. The Boys U-16s
produced a major upset as Samuel
West who was on the junior Davis
Cup team to represent T&T in El
Salvador two weeks ago, found him-
self on the losing end to little known
Andre Crawford on court six.
West who cruised past the open-
ing round, surrendered the opening
set 7-6 and (6) in the tiebreak be-
fore being humbled in the second
There was no surprises for Ed-
ward Laquis, another member of
the T&T junior Davis Cup team,
who clobbered Magnus Antoine
There were also wins for Ethan
Jeary 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 over George
Shepperd and Kyle Kee Young who
reigned over Mark Lessey 6-0, 6-1
in the U-16s.
Laquis who is also competing
in the u-18s, later defeated Adam
Scott 6-3, 6-2 for a possible meet-
ing with national teammate Adam
Ramkissoon this week, after Ram-
kissoon took care of Adam Escalante
6-0, 6-1 to advance to the second
Earlier in the U-14s Skeene got
the better of Jade Ali in two sets
4-0, 4-0; Keesa Lee Young defeated
Kaela Frank 4-1, 1-4, 4-0. Among
the boys there were also victories
for Ebolum Nwokolo 4-0, 4-0 over
Emmanuel Porther; David Rodri-
oguez 4-1, 4-2 over Levi Hinkson;
Kyle Kerry 4-0 4-0 over Isaac Blake
and Ethan Wong 2-4, 4-2, 4-0 over
