Veterinary Behaviourist at TTSPCA Tobago Clinic,
The Trinidad and Tobago Society for the Prevention
of Cruelty to Animals (TTSPCA) Tobago Shelter is an
animal welfare charity on the island of Tobago. It is a
non-governmental organisation (NGO) committed to:-
• preventing the suffering of all animals,
• reducing the population of stray and homeless animals
through the provision of temporary shelter,
• promoting responsible animal guardianship through public
education and information.
In addition to the animal caretakers and veterinarians, there
is a small committee of persons who volunteer their time to
meet once monthly to discuss the work of the
shelter as it strives to achieve its objectives-
The TTSPCA Board. Stray animals can pose
a health risk to humans and farm animals and
they may also have negative impacts on wild-
life. Furthermore, it is a stressful sight for
animal lovers; both local and tourist to see
animals uncared for.
Aside from the volunteer work done, the
TTSPCA Tobago Shelter derives some income
through services provided by the shelter, in-
• Boarding of animals while the owner is
• Transportation of animals,
• Installing run lines.
This income is variable and does not cover
How do we keep
doing what we
The public often questions why we request donations for
relinquishment and adoption. It is simply because the majority
of what we do is made possible through donations. Donations
go towards the cost of feeding, housing and providing basic
healthcare and surgeries for the animals. Remember, we are
an NGO and thus, nothing is free or sub-
sidised. We request donations upwards of $100 for cats and
$300 for dogs for adoptions, $200 and $300 respectively for
relinquishment. Often these donations are not met however we
are obliged by our good nature to help in whatever way we can.
Currently with the aid of television and social media, more
people are becoming aware of right and wrong ways to treat
animals and we strongly encourage good animal welfare. The
public often relies on the TTSPCA to take matters of animal
abuse into our hands however it is not always in our capacity
to do so. Current legislation does not allow for confiscation
or fining of intentional or neglectful animal abusers. We can
only help strays or animals relinquished to us, but all hope is
not lost. If you see a case of animal abuse there are a number
of steps that can be taken:-
• Speak to the offender. Often people are not aware what
they are doing is harmful and they may be willing to
change upon being informed.
• Keep records. Concise written information of what, when
and who will be essential in making official police reports.
• Evidence. Photographic or video evidence of the abuse
would be useful to back up your police report however
remember not to trespass or put yourself in harm’s way
• Showcase. Sharing the offence on social media and using
petitions can urge authorities to act on the matter. Note
that caution should be exercised in what is presented to
avoid defamation of character.
Want to help the TTSPCA? Aside from donating money
or items, you can help by sharing animal welfare knowledge,
volunteering skills and services to the TTSPCA Shelter, fos-
tering and adopting. Call in office and sign up to become a
member of the TTSPCA. Come to our annual general meeting
