THE ESSENCE OF A WOMAN
In my childhood, a girl’s journey into
womanhood was often compared to
and bombarded with the image of a
butterfly’s lifecycle so much that most
of my peers longed for the day they
evolved into the beautiful winged crea-
ture, adorned with intricate colour and fi-
nesse. Then, life HAPPENS! All the ups and downs, the
triumphs and defeats, the calm, the storms; and every girl
who was once connected to such incomplete philosophy was
now faced with weather far too harsh for such seemingly del-
There were those who became broken, while others
became tattered, torn and disenchanted, thinking they
were insufficient and subconsciously compromising their
true purpose and power. With a curious mind and constant
thirst for knowledge, I studied and began to question such
theory assiduously. I applied its formula but ultimately
discovered this set, subtle theory which was directly and
indirectly pounded into the psyche of us young females
did not and could not have been applied to all matters of
life. It became a mystery and solving it became obvious
and addictive. I wanted answers, to understand why. In
my very own wit and wisdom, I failed to quantify my
deductions. I took frequent recesses from my own reflec-
tion, experiences and began to observe my surroundings.
I set my attention on the women who were seasoned,
who lived, and who was birthed and raised in a dissimilar
generation. My grandmother, despite illness never failed to
smile and fought valiantly until the end. My mother, who
is gentle and nurturing in nature overcame hardship, never
compromising her dignity though her scars were evident
from raging weathers, she never seemed broken, tattered
or torn. How could this be? How could such a delicate
creature demonstrate this level of strength? I marveled at
the very thought. As I seasoned, I began to understand;
every stage of life brought its own trials and tribulations
and with every storm I weathered, brought understanding,
awareness, courage and the discovery of strength far great-
er than anything physical.
The heavens had open its doors and rested its grace
upon me. I had finally evolved into my truest form and
though soft and delicate, I grew stronger mentally, emo-
tionally and spiritually; strength which allowed me to carry
any burden upon my newly fashioned wings without
becoming broken, tattered and torn.
My quest for understanding life is not complete but I
have discovered there is something truly beautiful and
powerful about a woman who knows who she is, what she
wants and deserves. She is not only focused on her jour-
ney but inspires and strengthens others for theirs. She is
not conformed or twisted by the false ideologies of this
world but has fashioned her own image and appeal. She
understands her beauty is not measured by the bountiful-
ness of her body but by the words she speaks, the forma-
tion of her thoughts, the pureness of her heart, and the
light in her soul. She never quenches the fire that burns
within her to make others feel comfortable.
She is an immoveable force because she is no longer
afraid of her God-given strength but embraces it and finds
solace in it. She has taken life’s experiences and learn...
grow. There are no limitations only the ones others have
tried to place upon her but she refuses to accept. Her
ability to lead, she is familiar with but never replaces her
true nature, to support and nurture with the firmness of
leadership. She is not waiting for anyone to release her, to
validate her or behold her beauty. She is not trying to be
like a man...let men be men...but rather she is determined
to discover the flavour and embody the truest form, the
true essence of a woman.
Things to give up to be happy
Happiness is not always about the
things you acquire. A lot of the time,
your happiness hinges on the things
you’re able to give up.
In this article, we’re going to take
a look at the some things you need to
give up in order to be happy.
Resistance To Change
Change seems to be a dirty word in
society. If you give up meat and alco-
hol, your friends and colleagues might
mock you for changing.
But change is important. We all need
to grow if we’re to find ourselves. Life
would be very boring and unfulfilling
if we all stayed exactly as we are.
Experiment with change. You might
find that the best version of yourself
hasn’t been tried out yet.
Your Need For Control
It might sound harsh, but some
people are natural-born controllers.
They have to be in control of every-
thing. If they’re not, they find it real-
ly hard to settle down and focus.
It’s the reason why some of us hold
back from doing stuff that could actu-
ally make us happy. We don’t take
spontaneous road trips, because we
have no control. We don’t like last
minute changes of plans because it
means we’ve lost control.
It means that we miss out on so
Predictability is good sometimes.
But unpredictability is exciting. It’s life
in the raw. When you surrender con-
trol now and then, amazing things can
Instead of following some sort of
predestined plan and living your life
according to a very strict, very mun-
dane routine, cast your fate to the
wind and see what happens.
You might meet some amazing peo-
ple and chance upon some amazing,
There are people who have more
money than you, a bigger house, a
better car and so on.
There will always be people like this.
But why waste your time being jealous
of them? It will only do you more
harm than good.
Stop comparing yourself to others.
Just keep doing your thing, and stay
focused on your own goals. Also, be
grateful for all the great things you
already have in life.
This is a hard one to give up. But
if you start to realise that worry is a
waste of time and energy, you can start
to be a lot happier.
Put your faith in the cosmos. What
will be will be.
Made a mistake? Now is the time
to start accepting responsibility.
Once you stop blaming others, you
realise that your destiny is in your own
hands. This is really empowering.
Your Need To Be Liked
You’d think that to be happy, you
need everyone to like you. Not true.
Happiness must come from within,
and not from outside. Everyone has
haters. It’s a fact of life in 2017, where
we are all connected. But you mustn’t
rely on validation from other people.
You’ve got people who love you –
your close friends and family. That
should be enough.
Forget the rest. If you let what other
people think of you influence your
mood, you’ll find it hard to be yourself.
The past has gone. It’s not coming
back, and it doesn’t have to define
