Home' Trinidad and Tobago Guardian : May 6th 2017 Contents Three questions totalling four marks
are to be removed from the exam
marking scheme scripts of this year's
Secondary Entrance Assessment
(SEA) exam, after irregularities in the
maths and language a rts components
were "flagged" Thursday.
Michelle Mitchell The sealed exams
were opened for the SEA examination.
If the Minister had known of this be-
forehand, then that would have been
a question of both ethics and legality.
Furthermore, the invigilators would
then have distributed the papers and
also reviewed them, as the candidates
wrote the exam. Noticing the irreg-
ularities then, they would have been
brought to the attention of the chief
invigilator, and the protocols observed,
resulting in the candidates' attention
having been brought to the irregulari-
ties and an instruction given to "leave
out" those questions. So there.
Vitas Butkoon What about the child
that did not complete but spent the
majority of the time alotted to figure
out one of the wrong questions? MOE,
when will it stop? Why wasn't this
vetted first? Seriously.
Daniel Knights People know that
the MOE does not set the exam pa-
Jacqueline Benjamin Hope some of
you know that the MOE does not set
the SEA papers, this is done by CXC in
Barbados. The errors will not only af-
fect T&T students but students of the
Arnold Narine It's not about not
marking the "bad" questions. What
about the students who didn't finish
the exam because they lost valuable
time trying to make sense of the mad-
ness. This exam cannot be graded. It
won't be fair.
Fishermen: Coast Guard
stripped us naked
Fifteen fishermen from Pakistan in
Marabella are now calling for justice,
after they alleged they were detained
by the T&T Coast Guard, stripped na-
ked and jokes made about their private
parts at the Point Lisas Transshipping
port on Wednesday morning.
Harry Ramharack This incident
reminds us of those times when the
Guardia Nacional used to ill-treat our
fishermen when they strayed into
Venezuelian waters. Too bad our own
coast guard is treating our fishermen
like this. The authorities must ensure
that this behaviour of our coast guard
is never repeated.
Afeisha Vincent Yes, there is ah
place in South Trinidad called Paki-
stan---in Marabella to be exact.
Afeisha Vincent That's not fair at
all.Carolee Lewis I don't agree with the
stripping but the Coast Guards have a
right to search everybody for guns and
drugs. That is why there is so much
crime in Trinidad today. Remember
back in the days when Venezuelans
used to fish in Trinidad Trinidad wa-
ters. Do you think they were really
Ryan Steinberg Jr. Whether they
are illegal or not there are maritime
laws that prohibit from the disgraceful
interception and ridicule of occupants.
Ambrosine Rose Awful, just awful.
Why would you do that? Not funny
Joe Paul It's only an allegation and
should be treated as such before cruci-
fying our coast guard.

Will squatters have to
pay property tax? Govt
working out key issues
Government has sought legal advice
to examine whether squatters on
private lands and those with buildings
on state lands will have to pay the tax,
Finance Minister Colm Imbert said
yesterday. He said the Attorney Gen-
eral has asked the Solicitor General to
examine the matter.
Fazir Mohammed Squatting is
illegal. If squatters are taxed then you
Richard Trestrail Surely paying the
tax will legitimise their occupation.
Jillian Thomas If I am squatting and
have to pay tax, then the land auto-
matically becomes mine. What rachify
is this? By saying such foolishness you
are going to promote land hoarding
and more squatting.
Barry Telesford Everybody wants
to eat-a-food, but all must contribute.
Phillippa Chevalier Why you want
to legalise squatters on private land?
Private landowners, start protecting
your property. Be the first in line to pay
Jacqueline Benjamin They pay for
electricity and some of them pay a
WASA bill. They should pay at least
for the building they have on the land.
Why should they live for free?
Jesse Figeroux If they pay tax then
Nila Mahase Maharaj That is ole
talk... to make others feel like the tax
will be equal. The process will never be
worked out. Schemes.
Gina M-o In the context of the law,
asking squatters to pay property tax
makes no sense. shouldn't legal ad-
vice been sought much earlier on this
Ryan Steinberg Jr. Squatters can-
not be taxed until the government
gives them possession of the land if its
state land, showing the property line
they are squatting on. If the govern-
ment does come up with some idiot
laws the homeowner on state proper-
ty is entitled to water and electric be-
cause they are paying for that service.
In Maine USA if you squat on Fed-
eral land you must fence the property
and live there for five yrs as your only
place of abode. Only then you are
taxed and have entitled to government
services. So in T&T once the govern-
ment tax squatters they would be
entitled to those property.
