Ramgeet goes winless
but crowned champion
PHOENIX--- Jamaican An-
drew Ramgeet was crowned
championjockey at Turf Par-
adise despite going winless
in four rides on Sunday's
He ended on 107 wins, eight
clear of David Lopez to seal his
first title at the southwestern
United States racetrack in only
his second season.
Ramgeet also topped the
money list with US$995, 979.
The seasoned rider finished
third last season behind then
champion Scott Stevens, after
moving from his usual stomping
grounds at Mountaineer Park in
This year, Stevens finished
third on 97 wins alongside Jorge
Bourdieu on the same amount
while Israel Hernandez was fifth
on 62 wins.
Ramgeet's hopes of celebrat-
ing his maiden title with at least
a victory were dashed when he
could only produce a best of
second in race two and race five.
Going 6-1/2 furlongs in race
two, he was the runner up
aboard favourite Rhetorical,
finishing nearly four lengths
behind winner Migiwewin.
And in race five over six fur-
longs, Ramgeet narrowly missed
out with odds-on bet Trust San-
tiago, finishing half-length be-
hind 3-1 choice Magpie Jimmie.
Ramgeet was third in the day's
opener with favourite Eleven Zip
going a mile and sixteenth and
was fourth in race four over a
mile with 2-1 chance Unbridled
Torch, as his son Andre Ramgeet
took the wire first with 3-1 bet

Husbands shines with triple
to remain in touch
Patrick Husbands kept in touch
with the leaders in the early ex-
changes at Woodbine when he
rode a handsome triple on Sun-
day's 10-race card.
The Barbadian, who cele-
brates his 44th birthday later
this month, rode winners in race
six with Conquest Lemonraid, in
race nine with Commute and in
the day's final race with Brilliant
Charlie, to snatch a share of the

standings on 12 wins from 43
rides, four adrift of leader and
defending champion, Eurico
Rosa da Silva, and just two be-
hind the second placed Rafael

with a 'special'
Armandihan should be ideally suited to seven fur-
longs of an 'aged' Maiden Stakes on 'good to firm'
Catterick today; all previous runs have been mile
races and Kevin Ryan's charge has twice weakened
when looking nigh invincible in the closing stages.
If ownership was still my spin Armandihan would
be an ideal type; a sizable scopey sort with a huge
stride and probably a sprinter as he matures.
Hopefully Kevin Stott will again again give Arman-
dihan 'free rein' around a circuit that is conducive
to speed; Sir Michael Stoute-trained four-year-old,
Mokhald, the only conceivable time-handicap danger,
will be hard-pressed to peg him back at a difference
of 12lbs weight-for-age allowance.
Races over this tough distance are always intrigu-
ing, any thoroughbred suited to seven can usually
convert to sprinting; I'll be fascinated to see Arman-
dihan attempting to burn them off and sorting out
the wheat from the chaff. Napped, with confidence!
Capla Dancer was 66/1 when making a sensational
2-y-o debut at Ripon three weeks ago, wonder what
price this Red Jazz filly will be in the nine-runner
Novice Auction Stakes over five furlongs.
There was no fluke about it, the time-figure indi-
cates a useful effort and what beats Capla Dancer
Karl Burke places shrewdly, wonder why sta-
ble-jockey, Dougie Costello, has been sacked!
Results are inconsistent currently on account
of desperately cold, frosty, weather and so tread
carefully; bookmakers should be enjoying a harvest!
Enable runs out ready
winner of Cheshire Oaks
Enable paid a handsome compliment to stable-
mate Shutter Speed when running out a ready win-
ner of the Arkle Finance Cheshire Oaks, yesterday.
Third behind her Musidora-bound neighbour at
Newbury last time, the daughter of Nathaniel settled
in behind the trailblazing Erica Bing before quickening
to the front two furlongs out.
It proved a decisive move under Frankie Dettori for
although Ryan Moore sent market leader Alluringly
in pursuit they never threatened to reel her in and
went down by a length-and-three-quarters.
Montaly wins Chester
Cup under Oisin Murphy
Montaly edged out Yorkidding to win the Chester
Cup for Andrew Balding and Oisin Murphy. Check
out our report, reaction from connections and watch
the free video replay.
Montaly redeemed himself in the best possible
fashion when powering home late under Oisin Mur-
phy to win the 188Bet Chester Cup.
In the paddock before the race Montaly kicked
out as trainer Andrew Balding's wife Anna Lisa at-
tempted to give Murphy the leg up. He fractionally
missed his intended target, but he did kick her bag,
smashing her phone in the process.
For his sake it was a good job he prevailed, other-
wise he might have been going without his supper
- instead, Balding might be able to afford an upgrade.
In a typically Chester Cup, Yorkidding led from her
Mark Johnston-trained stablemate Watersmeet in
the straight and looked like landing the spoils after
being prominent throughout.
