Young SPOTT Volunteers
SPOTT- Not Just
a Vet Thing
We are getting closer and closer to SPOTT 2017!!!
Registration closes in just three (3) days and SPOTT
2017 is now a mere 9 days away. It is with this in
mind that we shift the focus on you! Yes you, our
readers, pet owners, men and women on the street,
to let you know the SPOTT is more than just a vet
thing. It is, as we say in Tobago- "All Ah We Ting."
The success of past SPOTTs has been in no small
part, due to the many non- veterinary personnel,
giving of their time, services and money to help us
take one more step along the way to eliminating the
stray animal problem and all the issues that it brings
to our beautiful island home- Tobago.
While the actual surgeries during SPOTT are performed
by Veterinarians or by Veterinary Students under the su-
pervision of Veterinarians, many things go into getting
the patient on the operating table and under the surgeon's
knife. Non- veterinary volunteers assist in patient reg-
istration and eventual discharge when owners return to
have collect their pets. This allows for more efficient use
of veterinary skills, maximising the number of surgeries
that can be safely performed over the two days.
Beyond greater efficiency, there are a number of different
ways our volunteers and partners can get involved. Here
are a few.
Register- The ideal SPOTT patients are mixed breed
dogs which include 'pompeks' and 'pothounds' aka Tobago
Terriers. Additionally, all cats are welcome. So if you have
any of the above, know anyone who does or if there are stray
dogs in your community, call us at 639- 2567 to register.
Educate- There are a number of benefits to spaying and
neutering. There are also criteria for when and why they
should be done. Your veterinarian is a good resource for
all this information. Many persons have misconceptions
about what sterilisation involves and its outcomes. Since
we all tend to accept information from our peers, you can
play an integral role in changing attitudes towards steri-
lisation and other in animal health issues.
Donate- Donations of time, skill, services and yes,
finances go a long way in meeting the needs of the pro-
gram. From accommodation and meals for non-Tobago-
nian volunteers to transportation and on site man-power,
donations by individuals and organisations are welcomed
and needed. If you are interested in helping, call us and let
us know, we would both be glad that you did,
Spread the Word- Share, Like, Tweet, Snap etc. Social
media makes sharing information that much easier. Even
if you are not tech savvy, word of mouth is still a reliable
means of advertising. Get your family, friends, neighbours
etc. with pets to register. Additionally, if you have partic-
ipated in past SPOTTs, talk about your experiences. It is
said, experience is our greatest teacher.
The TTSPCA Tobago and its volunteers are very excited
as we get closer to the big days. They will be long days of
hard work, but it all pales in comparison to the feelings
of fulfilment and camaraderie we each feel. So Register,
Educate, Donate and Share all about SPOTT 2017. See you
