UN: Strive to be like Mandela
As the world cele-
brated Nelson Man-
Day yesterday, the
United Nations Secre-
tary General Antonio
Guterres appealed to
persons globally to
strive to be more like
the former prisoner
who never let himself
be defined by his past.
In a release via the local
UN office, Guterres de-
scribed the former South
African president as a
man of courage, wisdom,
compassion and humili-
ty who was committed to
social justice and achiev-
ing a culture of freedom
Guterres said, "One of
the most important les-
sons we can learn from
Nelson Mandela is that to
make progress, we must
look forward, however
difficult that may be."
Known as prison-
er 46664 for 18 years,
Guterres said Mandela,
"never became a prisoner
of his past. Sentenced to
hard labour and solitary
confinement on Robben
Island, he rose above
suffering and indignity
to lead his country, and
our world, to a brighter
He said the South
and philanthropist, who
served as president of
South Africa from 1994
to 1999---was one who
refused to succumb to
bitterness and poured his
formidable energy into
realising his vision of a
democratic South Africa.
Quoting Mandela, who
once said a saint could be
defined as a sinner who
keeps on trying, Guterres
echoed, "That is a pow-
erful message of hope, in
a world riven with fear
and cynicism. It is never
too late to face the future
and try again."
He said the best trib-
ute the world could pay
this great man was not in
words or in ceremonies,
but actions that improve
our world. "Each of us
can make a difference
in promoting peace, hu-
man rights, sustainable
