Arrogate soundly beaten by Accelerate
DEL MAR, California (AP) ---Mike Smith
tried everything he could with Arro-
gate. He moved the colt to the outside,
but he didn't pick up the pace. Smith
dropped him down near the rail before
wheeling him outside once more.
"He just wasn't trying," the Hall of Fame
Accelerate stunned overwhelming fa-
vorite Arrogate to win the $300,000 San
Diego Handicap by 8 1/2 lengths Satur-
day at Del Mar, snapping the seven-race
winning streak of the world's top-ranked
Arrogate finished fourth, beaten by 15
1/4 lengths in the 4-year-old colt's first
race since March 25 in Dubai.
"I'm at a loss for words," Smith said.
"He was just flat, so flat."
His trainer, Bob Baffert, was blunter,
saying Arrogate "laid an egg."
It wasn't the first time Accelerate got the
best of Arrogate. Last year at Los Alam-
itos, Accelerate beat Arrogate by a neck
in the colt's career debut in a race won
by another horse. It was Arrogate's lone
loss until Saturday.
"I thought he'd run better than that,"
Baffert said, "but he just didn't want to
Accelerate lived up to his name, leading
all the way while covering 1 1/16 miles in
Ridden by Victor Espinoza, Accelerate
paid $17.60, $32.60 and $22 as the 7-1
second choice in the field of five.
"He got in a nice rhythm; he was going
easy," said Espinoza, aboard for the first
time. "I was surprised by how far I won.
I wasn't surprised that I did; I was here
Donworth, a 24-1 shot, returned $119.80
and $67.40. His payoffs were a track re-
cord, bettering the old mark of $101.60
and $40.20 set by Cipria on Sept. 1, 1955.
Baffert-trained Cat Burglar paid $38.20
All but $214,466 of the $2,671,938 total
win, place and show pool wagering was
bet on Arrogate, the 1-20 favorite.
Arrogate's winning streak included the
$6 million Breeders' Cup Classic last year,
the $12 million Pegasus World Cup and
the $10 million Dubai World Cup. He
earned $18,000, boosting his career total
to $17,102,600, a North American record.
It wasn't the first time Baffert had led
a world-beater to the track only to watch
That's what happened in 2015, when
American Pharoah was stunned by Keen
Ice in the Travers barely two months after
becoming horse racing's first Triple Crown
winner in 37 years.
"That's why my hair is white," Baffert
quipped after the race.
Under the race's handicap conditions,
Arrogate carried high weight of 126
pounds, spotting Accelerate nine pounds.
But Baffert said the weight difference had
nothing to do with the result.
'City' dwellers love to
'Escape' and invest
Escape The City is an appropriately-named
selection for a fifteen-runner Fillies' Novice
Auction Stakes over six furlongs of 'good to
soft' Windsor where 'Monday-nighters' are
always an attraction, involving a mass exo-
dus from London; 'City-ites' certainly like to
let their hair down in confines of this pictur-
esque Thames-side venue and they will on this
Trainer Hughie Morrison also loves the crack and
he'll be expecting once-raced Escape The City to
build on a splendid Newbury debut which resulted
in this Cityscape filly being beaten only two and a
half lengths by Electric Landlady in similar circum-
stances eleven days ago. Stable apprentice, Charlie
Bennett, seemed suitably encouraged.
Bennett was nominated months ago as an ex-
ceptional talent and we advised you to back all his
mounts in handicaps; presumably that advice was
taken and hefty amounts are now lodged in your
None of nine others to have raced is likely to pres-
ent any problems to Escape The City if she rep-
licates (or indeed improves!) her effort but there
are five newcomers from in-form yards and it will
be intriguing to watch pre-race betting exchanges.
Running in tandem will be a seven-race pro-
gramme at 'good to firm' Beverley where Me Be-
fore You contests a twelve-runner Fillies' Novice
Stakes over five furlongs; looks a cracking each-way
proposition from a low draw ridden by computer
champion, Danny Tudhope, for his proliofic boss,
Earlier Richard Fahey, fresh from his Newbury
triumph, will be disappointed if Regulator doesn't
make it second time lucky in a Novice Stakes over
six furlongs on a 'good' surface which should ride
like a carpet. Clear 'best-in' on the TH judged on his
second at Beverley earlier this month. Don't oppose!
Enable in contention for
King George VI at Ascot
Connections of dual Oaks winner Enable are plan-
ning to leave her in the King George VI And Queen
Elizabeth Stakes at Monday's confirmation stage.
The Ascot Group One, which is run on Saturday,
had initially been ruled an unlikely option for the
John Gosden-trained filly after she completed her
Classic double at the Curragh earlier this month.
The Darley Yorkshire Oaks at York on August 24
had been nominated as a possible target, but Ted-
dy Grimthorpe, racing manager to owner Khalid
Abdullah, reports she will stand her ground at the
five-day stage, although her participation is still
far from certain.
He said: "Enable will be left in the King George on
Monday, so she will still have the option (of running).
Cathy Gannon forced to retire with foot injury
Cathy Gannon is keen to move forward with her
life after being forced to admit defeat in her bid to
return to the saddle.
The 35-year-old has been sidelined since suffering
serious foot injury in the starting stalls at Lingfield
in May of last year.
She had initially hoped to return to action in time
to ride in the Shergar Cup last summer, but her
comeback has continually been delayed and after
taking further advice from doctors, she has called
time on her successful riding career.
