Writers invited to sell books at Carifesta
On behalf of The Ministry
of Community Development,
Culture and the Arts, writers
are invited to contact the Na-
tional Library (Nalis) to have
the opportunity to have their
books on sale at Carifesta 13
in Barbados. The festival runs
from August 17---27.
The deadline for submitting
books is this Friday, July 28. See
the guidelines below.
• Supply ten (10) copies of your
book by: Friday, July 28.
• Deliver the books to the Her-
itage Library Division, addressed
to Ms Jasmin Simmons, Librarian
IV Ag. or Ms Comissiong labelled
• Please indicate by letter the
cost of your publication in Barba-
dian and in United States currency.
You can use the daily bank rate to
establish this figure.
• Please note that monies would
be remitted to the author as well as

call cards, book marks, posters or
flyers, are all welcome.
ABOUT CARIFESTA 13
Carifesta 13 will be organised
along three main lines of pro-
• Caricom National Events.
These represent the core of the
Festival and will feature the pres-
entations of the visiting national
delegations as funded by partic-
ipating Caricom member states
in all artistic disciplines. These
programmes will feature on the
Festival’s main stages and at the
primary venues being refurbished
• Signal Events. These feature
the excellence of Caribbean profes-
sional arts and are funded primarily
by the host country and/or other
Caricom member states. These
events will be of an unquestion-
ably high standard towards cele-
brating the heights of Caribbean
artistic achievement. Three events
celebrating Caribbean excellence
will be featured in: dance —Danse
Caraibes; literature—A Literary
Evening; visual arts—Masters
• The Creative Fringe. This
will be the vibrant and varied com-
munity-lead programme based in
various centres around the island.
This empowers the wider artistic
community to develop their own
programme and stake their claim in
the festival. A vibrant community

ists with additional performance
opportunities as well as dynamic

In The Arena is the theme for
TEDx Port-of-Spain's seventh
annual conference at Queen's
Hall, Port-of-Spain on Saturday,
October 7 from 10 am.
Ten powerful speakers will share
their stories of survival, journeys of
excitement and even their scars of de-
feat as they have battled in the arena,
pursuing the dream of making space
T&T a better place. Along with the
thought-provoking talks, dancers,
singers and performers will touch
your hearts and engage your souls.
The rationale for the theme In The
Arena was inspired by the words of
Theodore Roosevelt, who in 1910 said:
“It is not the critic who counts, not
the person who points out how the
strong person stumbles, or where the
doer of deeds could have done them
better. The credit belongs to the per-
son who is actually in the arena, whose
face is marred by dust and sweat and
blood, who strives valiantly, who errs,
who comes short again and again, be-
cause there is no effort without er-
ror and shortcoming, but who does
actually strive to do the deeds, who
knows great enthusiasms, the great
devotions, who spends themselves
in a worthy cause, who at the best
knows in the end the triumph of high
achievement, and who at the worst,
if they fail, at least fail while daring
greatly, so that their place shall nev-
er be with those cold and timid souls
who neither know victory nor defeat.”
What began as a movement to
“change the conversation” in 2011,
turned into conversations of “cour-
age” in 2012. In 2013, TEDxPortof-
Spain continued the movement by
encouraging everyone to “connect”
and in 2014 they reflected on mov-
ing from a conversation to “doing,
undoing and re-doing”

TEDxPortofSpain, TEDTalks video
and live speakers will combine to
spark deep discussion and connec-
tion in a small group.

ers. Many of these talks are given
at TED's annual conference in Van-

Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir

Accordingly, the month of Shawwal 1438 A.H. will complete its thirtieth (30th.)
day today, Tuesday 25th. July 2017. As a consequence, the new month of Zul-
Qa'dah will commence on Wednesday, 26th. July 2017.
