Calypso Stickmen tackle
Canada in Pan Am Cup
This country's senior men's hockey team will
tackle Canada in their opening Group B match
of the 2017 Men's Pan American Hockey Cup
from 10 am at USA Field Hockey's showpiece
venue, Spooky Nook, in Lancaster, Pennsylva-
nia, USA today.
Four years ago in Brampton, Canada, the Calyp-
so Stickmen ended with the bronze medals behind
Canada and champions Argentina, after beating USA,
3-1 in their playoff.
From that team, six players have returned for this
year's tournament inclusive of England-based profes-
sional Kwandwane Browne, Australian-based Akim
Toussaint, Michael O'Connor, Shaquille Daniel, and
goalkeeping duo, Andrey Rocke and Kwesi Emmanuel.
A notable inclusion in the T&T squad is national
women's team coach, veteran hockey star Brian Gar-
cia, 38, who last represented T&T at the 2010 Indoor
Pan American Cup in Barquisimeto, Venezuela, which
was a qualifier to the Indoor Hockey World Cup along
with a core of youthful talent inclusive of new Defence
Force members Shaquille Daniel and Dylan Francis,
Arille Bowen, Jordan Vieira, Che Modeste, Marcus
Pascall and the Malvern quintet of young standouts in
Marcano-brothers, Teague and England-based Tariq,
Byer duo, Daniel and Lyndell as well as Emannuel's
younger sibling Kristien.
However, the T&T team will also be without two
key players who were impressive in their FIH World
League Round Two qualifiers on home soil in April
in captain Darren Cowie, due to injury and Mick-
ell Pierre, because of work commitments with the
T&T Defence Force and will lean of the experienced
Browne, Garcia and Rocke to lead them to glory.
Despite the duo's absence, coach Francis' line-
up, ranked 33rd in the world should prove a threat
against the 11th ranked Canadian, who are coming off
a victory over sixth ranked India at the same Hock-
ey World League semifinal event last month, a clear
signal that the team's qualification for Rio 2016 was
Chile and Venezuela will flick off the tournament
with a 10am meeting while the two other teams in
Pool B, Brazil (29th) and Mexico (41st) meet from 5
pm, followed by two-time winners and defending
champions, Argentina against USA.

The team to beat will be Argentina, ranked
number one in the world and Olympic gold
medallists, and having recently booked their
tickets to the World Cup in Bhubaneswar,
India, after advancing to the champion-
ship match at the FIH Men's Hero Hockey
World League Semifinals in London, Eng-
land. They lost to The Netherlands, but they
will be determined to defend their 2013 PAC
A bronze medal at Hockey World League
Round Two was reward for USA's progress
in recent seasons and ranked 26th in the
world, the gap in rankings does not point
to a drop in competitiveness.
T&T will next face Mexico at 12 noon on
August 6 followed by Brazil two days later
in their final round-robin match after which
the top two teams in each pool will advance
to the main draw semifinal play-off and the
two teams to emerge from this stage of the
tournament will earn a berth at the World
Cup next year.

the 2021 Pan American Cup, and the teams
