Cech blunder cost Arsenal in EPL
SWANSEA, WALES—An error by Arsenal
goalkeeper Petr Cech and two goals by
Sam Clucas helped Swansea to a 3-1 win
that lifted the Welsh club off the bottom
of the Premier League and out of the rel-
egation zone yesterday.
Arsenal slipped eight points off the
Champions League qualification posi-
tions on a night when new signing Hen-
rikh Mkhitaryan made his debut as a
substitute and Olivier Giroud came off
the bench for possibly his farewell.
Cech miskicked a clearance straight
at Jordan Ayew, who shot first time past
the goalkeeper and into the corner to put
Swansea 2-1 ahead in the 61st minute.
Clucas scored the clinching third goal
in the 86th, having got Swansea back
into the game with the equalizer in the
A minute earlier, Arsenal had taken
the lead through Nacho Monreal, who
converted a pass from Mesut Ozil.
With this result coming off the back of
a 1-0 win over Liverpool, Swansea has
claimed back-to-back wins over two of
the biggest teams in the Premier League
and is up to 17th place in the 20-team di-
Arsenal, though, is struggling to keep
up with its established rivals and is in
sixth place after 25 games.
Manager Arsene Wenger will hope
the addition of Mkhitaryan, and the po-
tential arrival of striker Pierre-Emerick
Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund,
can spark an upturn in form.
Aubameyang is set to come into the
squad in place of Giroud, who played the
final 15 minutes before possibly leaving
Wednesday on the final day of the Janu-
ary transfer window. (AP)
ENGLAND—Manchester City signed France under-
21 international Aymeric Laporte from Athletic Bil-
bao for a club-record fee of 65 million euros ($80
million) yesterday, taking its spending on centre
backs since 2014 to about $250 million.
The 23-year-old Laporte came close to joining
City in 2016—when Pep Guardiola took charge of
the current Premier League leaders—but backed
out of the move after feeling the Frenchman
wasn’t quite ready.
Eighteen months later, City clinched the signing
of the left-footed, ball-playing defender after meet-
ing his buy-out clause, strengthening the team’s
options in what has been a problem position for
Guardiola and previous managers.
“He’s strong in the air, good quality with the
pass. He is experienced, fast and he has the skills
we need,” Guardiola said. “He is the perfect age,
23 years old, so hopefully he will have a long ca-
reer here at Manchester City.”
Laporte is the second most expensive defender
in soccer history, with only Virgil van Dijk—who
joined Liverpool from Southampton for 75 million
pounds ($100 million) at the start of January—cost-
Since City won its most recent Premier League
title in 2014, Eliaquim Mangala has arrived from
FC Porto for a reported 42 million pounds and
Nicolas Otamendi joined from Valencia for 32 mil-
lion pounds in 2015. Another center back, John
Stones, cost an initial 47.5 million pounds in 2016.
Injured Sane out for ‘6, 7 weeks
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says
Leroy Sane will be out for “six, seven weeks”
after sustaining ankle ligament damage during the
team’s FA Cup win over Cardiff.
Sane’s absence leaves the Premier League lead-
ers short of attacking options in a crucial part of
the season, with the Germany winger potentially
missing up to 11 matches in four competitions.
That includes the League Cup final.
With Gabriel Jesus also injured, Sergio Aguero,
Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva will shoulder
the attacking burden for City. (AP)
