nea transplan and agreed to treat Faith.
Head of Ophthalmology at the SFGH
Dr Anil Armoogum explained that
donor tissues are needed for cornea
transplants. However, T&T does not
have a cornea tissue bank, so the tis-
sue has to be sourced from abroad.
In Faith’s case, the tissue and re-
quired instruments were imported
and the cost was covered by the
South West Regional Health Authority
“Before this, patients would have
had to seek private care, or make ar-
rangements to purchase the tissue
on their own via fund-raising, or with
medical social worker help, which
sometimes is not forthcoming. Some-
times patients would wait a long time
for this kind of surgery. Prior to Dr
Ramkissoon and this particular service
being offered, the wait time was indefi-
nite,” Dr Armoogum said.
“This surgery will greatly improve
this patient’s quality of life. Regardless
of whatever syndrome, she may have,
the inability to see reduces the qual-
ity of life. Now she can see her mom,
she can see what she is eating, she can
look at television. The things we take
for granted every day will have a tre-
mendous impact on her.”
Faith has been discharged from hos-
pital and is recovering at home.
Dr Ramkissoon currently has a wait-
ing list of 30 patients awaiting similar
Faith Haynes, 22, who has Down syndrome
(DNS), was on the verge of losing her eyesight
and needed $85,000 for specialist surgery when
her mother, Brenda Henry, met Dr Josh Ram-
kissoon, a cornea transplant surgeon at the San
Fernando General Hospital (SFGH).
As a result, Faith is now recuperating after un-
dergoing the first ever penetrating keratoplasty
(cornea transport) to be performed in T&T’s
public health system.
Although the Form Two student at the Eternal
Life Community Development in Macoya still
faces another surgery, this time for a cataract in
her left eye, her prognosis is good and significant
improvements to her vision are expected.
The condition for which Faith underwent the
procedure a few days ago is Keratoconus, a disor-
der which results in progressive thinning of the
cornea. It is common among people with DNS.
She was diagnosed about a year and a half
ago after Henry noticed that she was holding
everything close to her face and took her to a
private eye clinic.
“They gave me a quotation, telling me the
price of it, which I could not afford. With a little
barbecue, we tried, but when I went home one
day, I saw the black in her eye had turned blue.
I thought it was the cold, but when I looked, it
was not.” Henry said.
“When I went to Mount Hope (the Eric Wil-
liams Medical Sciences Complex) they told me
that the cornea was made up of five layers and
one had burst.”
Henry was told the kind of equipment re-
quired to treat the condition was not available
at Mount Hope. That was when. in hers desper-
ate efforts to save her daughter’s sight, she went
to the SFGH where she met Dr Ramkissoon. He
had recently returned to T&T after training at

THE CALL TO SALVATION
ARE YOUR SINS FORGIVEN?
IS YOUR LIFE RIGHT WITH GOD?
WHEN YOU DIE, WILL YOU GO TO HEAVEN OR HELL?
Please know that JESUS loves you and he deeply cares for you and he died on the cross for you.
JESUS wants to forgive you of all your sins and he wants to bless you with the FREE GIFT of
eternal life in heaven.
John 3:16,17 JESUS said, For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that
whoever believes in him, shall not perish but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the
world to condemn the world but that all the world through him might be saved.
Acts 4:12 Neither is there SALVATION IN ANY OTHER. For there is no other name under heaven
given among men whereby we MUST BE SAVED.
PLEASE PRAY THIS PRAYER TO HAVE YOUR SINS FORGIVEN AND TO RECEIVE
Dear Lord Jesus, I believe you are the Son of God and you died on the cross for my sins. Lord Jesus,
please forgive me of all my sins and come into my heart. Lord Jesus, I receive you as my Lord and
Personal Saviour. Amen. (Please send me a text if you prayed the prayer.)
