My job has a strict policy
about co-workers dating.
However, about three
months ago I started
hanging out with a guy in my department and it has been
fun non stop. We try to be discreet at work, but Tobago
is so small our boss found out and we have been given
an ultimatum; one of us has to leave by the end of the
I was shocked when Sean decided that he was not
leaving, even though he is aware that I have a son to feed.
He lives at home with his mother and has no children, so I
assumed that if he wanted this to work that he would do
the right thing.
He is refusing to leave and I am not going anywhere
either. Last week Friday, we had a falling out about it
since he did not want to listen to reason. I thought our
relationship meant more. He stated in no uncertain terms
that he was not leaving, however, later that night he
called me wanting to come to my house at eleven. Yes, I
let him come over since I love him very much, plus I was
hoping to show him how special he is to me so that he will
realise we have a future.
What should I do to convince this man that our
relationship is worth saving? How can I show him that
losing his job is worth it if he has me? Janelle, I need your
help, what should I do?
I am a bit confused. Initially, you stated that you and
Sean were “hanging out” and the focus seemed to be
“fun,” yet somehow you thought that meant you are
in a relationship. Unfortunately, those two do not
automatically translate into you two being a couple, nor
does it mean that a marriage proposal is on the horizon.
Based on what you have written I gather that this started
out as intercourse between two consenting adults, but
now you want more.
A man who values you and thinks that you could be
his future wife does not need to be convinced. A man
who cannot imagine spending his life without you would
not hesitate to choose you over his job. Of course, I am
assuming because I do not have all the details. I do not
know how marketable he is, his financial commitments
etcetera and based on the current economic climate
walking away from one’s job may not be a wise decision.
However, I need you to know your worth and don’t get
carried away by the physical aspect of this arrangement.
Sit down with Sean and ask him directly whether he is
willing to leave his job. If he says “no” and you decide that
you simply cannot, then go back to your boss and let him
know that you decided to end the relationship. He may
not believe and both of you may end up being dismissed
but give it a try.
Let this be a lesson to you going forward. In my opinion,
this relationship is based on the physical and Sean does
not seem to be as interested as you are. Sometimes you
need to forget how you feel and remember what you are
worth. I wish you all the best.
