Training young people to be
ethical leaders and representatives
of their countries is high on the
agenda of the worldwide educa-
tional organisation UWC. Its
Trinidad and Tobago branch,
UWC-TT, is looking for socially
conscious, academically talented
youths to join the growing number
of UWC alumni in this country.
UWC-TT says, in a release, that
it is offering four places this year
at UWC schools worldwide, with
up to 100 per cent scholarship
UWC (formerly United World
Colleges) is a system of schools
founded in 1962 on the principle
of building world peace and a sus-
tainable future. Encompassing 12
schools in locations as diverse as
Swaziland, the Netherlands and
Hong Kong, the system prepares
students to take the post-secondary
International Baccalaureate (IB)
The IB is very challenging, with
students sitting six subjects plus a
critical-thinking course, and also
including mandatory creativity,
action and service components.
The release says T&T citizens or
permanent residents who are cur-
rently sitting CSEC and are no older
than 17 on July 1, 2013, are encour-
aged to apply to UWC-TT before
the April 5 deadline.
Given the nature of the pro-
gramme, the best candidates are
open-minded students with strong
extracurricular portfolios as well as
excellent academic backgrounds
and an interest in global citizen-
This year UWC-TT has offers
for four places: UWC Maastricht,
the Netherlands (up to 100 per cent
scholarship assistance); Waterford
Kamhlaba UWC, Swaziland (up to
20 per cent); UWC-USA, New
Mexico (up to 25 per cent); and Li
Po Chun UWC, Hong Kong (no
Keren Timara Permel, who is
working towards her IB diploma
this year at UWC Costa Rica, said,
"UWC has allowed me to learn so
much outside the classroom.
"The lessons learnt from friends
and colleagues sometimes seem far
more valuable than what I have
learnt from my books.
"Reading the BBC news is one
thing but sitting next to a school-
mate who has seen his home
bombed and has been fleeing his
city for months, his perception of
his war-torn country completely
opposite to what I can ever read,
is a truly incredible experience."

cation forms, go to: tt.uwc.org.
