Home' Trinidad and Tobago Guardian : May 1st 2013 Contents Let me state categorically, that
I do not wish for the following
teams to perform well at the Indi-
an Premier League (IPL) currently
underway in India.
The Mumbai Indians, Chennai
Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals,
Royal Challengers Bangalore and
Kolkata Knight Riders. No matter
how many of you may be annoyed
with my statement above, I will
stand by it, in the best interest of
Yes, T&T and nothing else mat-
ters or should matter to most of
you, because, we need to be selfish
in this, our last year as a country
in the Champions League T20 finals
In particular, the news that we
have made the final draw automat-
ically is also quite pleasing and gives
T&T ample opportunity to exit this
tournament on a high.
So from now on, when Mumbai
is playing, please support the other
teams, it will be okay for you to
want Keiron Pollard to excel, but
the team can lose.
Similarly, with Dwayne Bravo s
Chennai Super Kings. So, while you
are dancing and smiling when Bravo
bowls and bats, just remember to
check the result and hope that the
Super Kings lose.
Let us also be on guard for Kevon
Cooper s Rajasthan Royals who are
playing improved cricket and while
wishing the best for Cooper, we
must not forget, the team must not
The Royal Challengers Bangalore
correctly have Christopher Gayle
as its marquee player, but T&T s
main fast bowler Ravi Rampaul is
also an integral part of that team,
and for that reason, supporting
Rampaul is good, but hoping the
Challengers fall short is best for
Finally, we have the defending
champion of the IPL, Kolkata
Knight Riders with the wily spin-
ning magician Sunil Narine in the
team, and while we all love to watch
Narine mesmerise the opposition,
we need to measure his wicket tak-
ing hauls with the overall result of
So the fact is, the four other
teams involved in the IPL, in Delhi
Daredevils, Pune Warriors, Kings
XI Punjab and Sunrisers Hyderabad,
given the format of the IPL, will
be the top four teams that will have
a chance to compete in the Cham-
Therefore, ideally, for team T&T
it is best, come May 13, when the
final four teams are known, that
these four are Daredevils, Warriors,
Punjab Kings and Sunrisers.
However, at the time of writing
and given a cursory perusal of the
current league table, both the Delhi
Daredevils (now being assisted by
Sir Vivian Richards) and Pune War-
riors (Marlon Samuels team), are
struggling at the bottom of the table
in the eight and ninth places,
respectively, and need to quickly
go on a sustained run to have any
chance of making the top four.
In this regard, we can only hope
that the other two teams, Kings XI
Punjab and Darren Sammy s Sun-
risers Hyderabad continue their
impressive performances to date
and finish in the top four, which
would mean that two or three T&T
players would be available (hope-
fully) to play for the country in our
last Champions League.
Ideally the three most valuable
players would be Bravo, Pollard and
Narine to any T&T team in any
format of the game, much more in
T20 cricket. Of course, Rampaul
and Kevon Cooper are also quite
capable players as well, and let us
not forget Samuel Badree, although
he has not played much.
As a gambling man by profession
(I wish), at this stage, it seems
almost 75 per cent certain that Royal
Challengers Bangalore and Chennai
Super kings will make the final four
and the other two places are up for
So as you continue to celebrate
and be happy when the T&T players
are on the field of play, please do
not hesitate to remember that
wanting an individual player to per-
form well is normal, but if it will
mean success for their team and
therefore their non-availability for
T&T, then certainly this support
needs to be measured.
As it stands, a T&T team with
at least three of these players in
the Champions League format will
be quite an explosive and dangerous
outfit, with the potential to again
reach the grand finale.
And given the fact, that this will
be the last year for T&T, the team
in this event with the advent of the
Caribbean Premier League, it would
be fitting for us to go with a loud
bang and the grand trophy and all
the deserved rewards.
