Prime Minister Kamla Persad-
Bissessar s Mother s Day reflections:
Today, I remember and salute my
own mother, who joined the good Lord
in Heaven many years ago, as well as
the hundreds of thousands of other
dearly departed mothers, grandmothers
and great-grandmothers of our beau-
Over the decades, these were the
women who worked as labourers or
professionals or in the homes to ensure
that their families, their future gen-
erations could call this country their
home, a place of opportunity, freedom
We may never truly realise how
much strength, courage and sheer
willpower and effort it took for these
women to forge ahead in the face of
life s many challenges back then, but
it is our duty to never forget the debt
of gratitude we owe them.
It falls upon us, as today s mothers,
to ensure that we preserve their values
and lessons of goodwill, compassion,
justice, equity, tolerance and love for
all by imparting them to our children.
I know that in today s society, it is
not always an easy task for mothers.
Many find themselves the sole
breadwinners of their homes, single
parents who struggle to make ends
meet while still raising their children.
As Prime Minister, I am committed
to ensuring the positive turnaround
of the country in all sectors and I often
find the strength of resolve in the les-
sons from my own mother, who used
to often preach to me to never give up
until the task at hand is finished and
everyone is happy because of it.
'Get an education...it is your true
ticket to independence'
But perhaps the greatest lesson I
learnt from my own mother was "learn
In other words, get an education,
for it is your true ticket to independ-
ence and upward mobility, a lesson
which inspired me to pioneer inno-
vative education policies like universal
secondary education, free laptops for
students and universal early childhood
care to ensure that families have equal
access to proper education and infor-
mation on all fronts.
We have revised the laws to ensure
that gender equality is implemented
on all fronts, while at the same time,
expanding maternity leave for women
and hiking up the minimum wage.
But while working on the larger poli-
cies, let us always remember to also
encourage our children, teach them
self-respect, take interest in their
schoolwork and support them at all
times, make sure that they are phys-
ically fit by getting them to participate
in outdoor activities like we did when
we were young, basically instill in them
these intimate values that will preserve
the very foundations of democracy
that our nation hold strong to.
task and on this very special weekend
where we honour and pay tribute to
our mothers, let us also recognise the
enormous strengths and contributions
of women and mothers, and use their
examples of love and courage as the
enduring inspiration of our greatness
as a people.
Happy Mother s Day to one and all.

young mothers to be a mother first and a friend

friends and they run the risk of compromising seri-

to love them and show them the love in what you

children. Make sure the spiritual side of their lives
is developed. There are a lot of the issues in the
society because the spiritual side is not well devel-
