The wait is over. The Differentology
video will finally drop today and the
song, which has endured beyond Carni-
val to be listed as one of the top sum-
mer anthems of 2013, will come to life
Talking to us about the video, Bunji
Garlin was especially grateful to all the
people who took the time to be a part of
his first video project.
"I give maximum respect to all the
people on the set, not only the creative
crew but the actors. They were not pro-
fessional actors but they just love the
vibes and wanted to give their energies,"
Stating that he learned to respect
video productions after his experience,
Bunji said making a video requires pa-
tience and understanding but in the end
it all comes together.
Addressing critics who say the video is
too late in coming, Bunji said given the
buzz Differentology is getting abroad,
the timing is good.
"My mind is beyond here right now
cause the song has gone beyond here
and it has gone to territories that require
a video. This is an application of skills
sets happening here...I could have done
the video for Carnival but the video
would have been beat out already."
He said too many times when songs
make it big beyond these shores there is
no follow up.
"We have to walk behind the song, es-
cort the song wherever it goes," he said.
Asked how he felt with the props from
the UK Guardian, which listed Differentol-
ogy as one of the summer anthmes of
2013, Bunji said it is very humbling.
The song has also been getting re-
quests on BBC's 1Xtra and remix of Tun
Up with the band Jus Now Now (consist-
ing of Bristol based DJ-producer, Inter-
face, and Trinidadian
percussionist-producer, LAZAbeam). Vibe
magazine describes the song as having a
genre-defying sound, which shoots turnt-
up bass into the sonic g-spot. The song is
now a favourite with UK DJs, Bunji re-
vealed, with DJ Bauer, the man behind
the Harlem Shake, using it to open his
set. The song has been licenced by Nerv-
ous Records for distribution in the US.
With all the exposure, Bunji said he has
been getting requests to travel to new
territories to perform. He said the suc-
cess of his songs is not just a personal
"Yeah it's a good look for me and my
family and my camp but really and truly
wherever the song goes it is a represen-
tative of T&T, it is a win for Trinidad and
Tobago, it is a part of the pie that comes
from here," he said.
Even though his focus is on pushing his
music worldwide, Bunji is keeping busy at
home. He is working on a two song proj-
ect with Freetown Collective called
TROM (The Return of the Music) and is
about to hit the studio to work on a new
song called Carnival Tabanca.
The song is about the loss people feel
when Carnival is over. The idea hit him
when he attended Tribe's Las Lap party
and saw people wearing their costumes.
He said people seem to long for Carni-
val even more than before, citing the
playing of soca in clubs and on radio
through the year. Artistes such as Mr
Renzo, K Rich and Olatunji are working at
home consistently because people miss
Carnival and want to hear the artistes.
"Carnival Tabanca is real. I have a line in
the song that says every time I hear a
siren I feel is a police escort to carry me
to a fete...it real sad and melancholy." The
song is expected to be released by mid-
Bunji also recently completed a collabo-
ration with Kardinal Official, a hip hop
artiste from Toronto and is working with
him on another track that will be pro-
duced by Mario Callendar of Kes the
