National men s singles champion Curtis
Humphrey and his brother Alaric Humphrey com-
bined for all four wins as the University of T&T
(UTT) moved into sole possession of top spot in
the T&T Table Tennis Association First Division
League with 4-3 win over Arima Hawks at its
O Meara Campus, Arima on Friday night.
Going into the match both teams had won their
first two matches, and UTT was first to strike with
Curtis beating former national and two-time
Caribbean champion Lionel Darceuil 11-8, 11-13, 11-
8, 11-7 only for former five-time national champion
and current local table-tennis boss Reeza Burke, to
get Hawks level with a come-from-behind, 10-12,
11-9, 11-8, 11-3 defeat of Kenwin Small.
Alaric restored UTT s lead at 2-1 with a tense 11-
7, 8-11, 11-7, 11-7 victory over Anson Wellington
but once again Hawks responded with Darceuil
and Burke taming the Humphreys duo, 11-9, 6-11,
14-12, 11-8 in the doubles.
The see-saw battle continued with Curtis restoring
UTT s advantage at 3-2 after he stopped Burke 11-
5, 11-6, 12-14, 11-8, but with a chance to seal victory
Small was denied by Wellington, 7-11, 8-11, 11-9,
7-11 to set up a seventh and deciding match where
Alaric came from a set down to beat Darceuil, 9-
11, 11-5, 12-10, 11-6.
On Thursday, D Abadie Youths rebounded from
its loss UTT by trouncing Gladiators, 4-0 with
Michael Nanton and Declan John the main players
at the D Abadie Community Centre.
Nanton outlasted Aaron Edwards 11-8, 9-11, 11-
4, 7-11, 11-5 and Everton Sorzano swept past Kyle
Bennett 11-4, 11-6, 11-8 while John got the better
of Michael Noel, 9-11, 11-7, 6-11, 11-9, 11-5 for a
3-0 cushion before Nanton and John won the dou-
bles over Edwards and Bennett, 6-11, 11-9, 11-5, 11-

for Paradise a minute
later to trail 3-1 while
the visitors also con-
ceded an own goal two
minutes from the half,
for a 3-2 score.
Paradise drew level
with Malvern in the
50th when Jarel
Thompson found the
back of the net as it
seemed set for an
unlikely victory, which
was dashed by Tariq s
winner in the 59th.
It was the first win
in seven matches for
Malvern to end the
first round of the
