T&T s "Calypso Spikers," the five-
team reigning Caribbean champions,
will come against world top-ranked and
defending champion USA in their open-
ing match of the 12th Women s Pan
American Cup which comes off in Lima,
Peru from June 10 to 17.
It will mark the first time that a South
American country will host the inter-
continental event, a qualifying compe-
tition to the FIVB World Grand Prix of
the following year.
In addition to USA, the Krystle Esdelle-
led T&T women, ranked 32nd in the
world, will do battle with 18th-ranked
Puerto Rico and 19th-rated Argentina in
their four-team Group A series in the
12-team tournament in Callao.
Despite being ranked outsiders in the
group, Esdelle and her teammates who
will depart on Saturday for Peru will be
brimming with confidence having topped

USA in Pan Am opener
The local teams of Daneil Williams and Simon
Blake as well as Nancy Joseph and Pauline
Woodroffe left T&T last night for Mexico to compete
in the fourth stop of the seventh Norceca Interna-
tional Beach Volleyball Circuit in Toluca at the State
of Mexico University Sports Complex, San Antonio
The tournament in Mexico which begins tomorrow,
will be the fourth on the trot to start this season for
the Toco-born pair of Williams and Blake.
Both men were also part of the Toco Youths squad
which ended second to Technocrats on debut in the
second annual Caribbean Volleyball League at the
University of the West Indies Sports and Physical
Educational Centre, St Augustine, on Sunday night.
In the first-leg in the Cayman Islands back in
March, Blake and Williams placed 11th out of 16
teams, while they improved to seventh from 13 teams
in Boca Chica, Dominican Republic, a week later,
followed by a season-best fifth in Guatemala.
The other teams representing the Caribbean are
Aruba (Eargenell DeCuba/Mitchel Daniel), Bahamas
(Byron Ferguson/Princtanique Wilson), Barbados
(Hugh Sealey/Darn Gill), Cuba (Karell Pena/Sergio
Gonzalez), Dominican Republic (Luis Castillo/Alex
Medina) and Puerto Rico (Roberto Rodriguez/Hector

debut after missing out on the previous tournaments

This year will mark the seventh straight year T&T
will be competing at the Pan Am Cup, with its best-
ever finish---tenth for the past four years---after being
12th, both in 2007 and 2008.
Last year in the Pan Am Cup final held in Mexico,
USA bounced back from a 0-2 deficit to win the
gold following a dramatic five-set victory 28-30, 18-
25, 25-22, 25-21, 15-11, over Brazil to add to its previous
triumph of 2003, also in Mexico.
Three-time champions and three-time runner-
up Brazil, ranked second in the world and the reigning
Olympic champions will compete in Group C with
tenth-ranked and two-time winner Dominican
Republic, Mexico (#25) and Colombia (#26) in Hua-
cho, while in the group to be played in Iquitos, four-
time champions Cuba (#13), Peru (#17), Canada (#22)
and 26th-ranked Costa Rica do battle.
