There s a brand new act on
the soca scene and it is
sizzling hot. Oscar B &
Vibes had its launch last Friday
evening at the panyard of Carib
Woodbrook Playboyz in Newtown.
Led by Tobago-born vocalist Oscar
Benjamin, the aggregation made
a good first impression, cheered
on by guests and wellwishers.
Oscar B, the former lead vocalist
of Byron Lee and The Dragonaires,
received congrats from his "broth-
ers" in song, including Dereck
Seales, Kerwyn Trotman and Steve
Sealy, as well as producers Kenny
Phillip and Fareed Emamali, and
promoters Gerald Yorke and Fred-

What impressed me most about
Vibes was its inclusion of live horns,
something missing in music bands
these past few years. The horn sec-
tion included Marlon Roach
(trumpet); Ricardo Seales (saxo-
phone); and, Miguel Rawlins (trom-
bone). Fronting with Oscar B on
vocals was Marsha Martin.
Chatting with Pulse on Friday
night, Oscar B said: "I want this
band to be a well-rounded, enter-
taining-to-all kind of band, catering
to all ages, from 16-60."
The band didn t disappoint, play-
ing a varied repertoire of popular
past hits, though a tad bit too loud
Following two critically acclaimed and successful seasons,
SONGBIRDS...live returns to the local musical landscape with Kelli
Nova opening Season 3 on July 8.
Rebranding is the order of the day for this super talented,
seasoned singer/songwriter. Although still relatively young in age,
Nova brings a fresh, new, edgy look and a sound that has always
resonated with her. In addition to her preferred R & B, she
experiments with several other genres including reggae, pop and
Recently branching out of the sister act duo 2NTRIGUE, Nova has
been in the music industry for the past ten years. She has had the
privilege of working and opening for such top notch artistes as
Usher, Akon, Whitney Houston, Rod Stewart, Beres Hammond,
Damian "Junior Gong" Marley, Patra, Rupee, Bunji Garlin and Destra.
Seeing and experiencing the good, bad and the ugly of it all lends to
the authenticity in her vocals when she performs.
Nova's background is as colourful as her personality. With a God-
fearing mother and a father who was the life of any party, she and
her siblings are a mixture of love and crazy, but always a close-knit
unit. There was always music in the household...the likes of Marvin
Gaye and Whitney Houston, which moulded the foundation for her
own musical direction.
Nova's work ethic is immeasurable and she has recently released a
crossover Reggae/R&B track that features reggae/dancehall artiste
Fojo, called Love Don't Come Easy, and is currently in the studio
working on new material.
SONGBIRDS...live Season 3 takes place at La Cantina Pizzeria, 12
Victoria Avenue, Port-of-Spain. Great singing, good music, classy
production and a fantastic time await all.

NEW YORK---Target Corp said
Thursday that it is ending its relationship
with celebrity cook Paula Deen as fallout
builds from revelations that the
Southern celebrity chef used racial slurs
in the past. Diabetes drug maker Novo
Nordisk also joined the companies
distancing themselves from her. The
discounter, based in Minneapolis, said
that it will phase out its Paula Deen-
branded cookware and other items.
"Once the merchandise is sold out, we
will not be replenishing inventory," said
Molly Snyder, a Target spokesman.
Diabetes drug maker Novo Nordisk said
Thursday it and Deen have "mutually
agreed to suspend our patient education
activities for now."
The developments are the latest blow
to Deen's business.
Wal-Mart Stores Inc, the world's
largest retailer, said Wednesday that it's
also cutting ties with Deen. The world's
largest retailer currently carries a variety
of products under her moniker, including
food items, cookware and health and
wellness products, at all of its 4,000 US
namesake stores. (AP)
