Political leader of the
Congress of the People
(COP) Prakash Ramad-
har has endorsed the
selection of Khadijah
Ameen as the Chagua-
nas West candidate.
said Ameen represented
youth, womanhood, hope
for the future and an
approach to new stan-
dards. Ramadhar was at
the Tunapuna Hindu
School where he distrib-
uted vouchers to 28 chil-
dren through an empow-
Asked about Ameen s
chances at the July 29
polls, Ramadhar said
while that matter rests
in the hands of the con-
stituents, "I think her
chances are very good."
The UNC s pick for Chaguanas West,
Khadijah Ameen says she is excited to
be a candidate.
Speaking with reporters on Friday night
after she was given the nod by Prime Min-
ister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, Ameen said
there was a lot of media and public spec-
ulation that she would be chosen to contest
the seat even before the official announce-
Ameen said she was not going up against
Warner because he has not officially
announced his intentions to contest the
seat as an independent candidate or as a
candidate of a new political party.
"He said he is considering his options."
Ameen said she was willing to work
with anyone to see the UNC regain the
Chaguanas West seat.
She said Manohar Ramsaran and
Satyanand Mahabir, two candidates who
were also screened last Tuesday, had also
indicated their willingness to help. She
said it was important that the UNC should
make a good campaign effort and offer
She said Chaguanas has a long tradition
of supporting the UNC and not individuals
or parties other than the UNC. Ameen
said she was willing to work with anyone
who wants to see the party get the seat
under the control of the ruling party.
It was business as usual for Jack
Warner opened the doors of his
Chaguanas West constituency office from
4 am and started seeing dozens of people
who were seeking help.
Even though the party rejected Warner
as their candidate to contest the Chagua-
nas West by-election on July 29, he said
his duty was to serve the people. "I can t
turn away anyone. I help all who come."
Warner said he was chosen by 31 party
groups and numerous supporters, yet
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar
and the screening committee chose to
ignore the PM s own mantra that "the
voice of the people is the voice of God."
Warner said he was saddened to hear
the PM s comments on Friday night that
the Panday regime was destroyed by the
"three Rs" in 2000.
Warner said Persad-Bissessar, too, was
surrounded by a number of Rs. "These
same Rs will lead to her downfall if she
does not act in time."
The Congress of the People (COP) is
moving to discipline members.
COP leader Prakash Ramadhar said as
the party gears up for the local government
elections and general election they did not
want members to believe that they can
switch from one party to another.
"Then there will be no discipline. And
you will find them thinking that if they are
not agreeing with a decision today...I will
go over to the PNM."
With the COP drafting a new constitution,
Ramadhar said when it came on stream, it
would be enforced to ensure that members
Ramadhar was speaking yesterday at the
Tunapuna Hindu School.
This follows the move by one of the party s
founding members Manohar Ramsaran who
forfeited his COP membership to be screened
as a candidate by the UNC for the Chagua-
nas West by-election.
Ramadhar described Ramsaran s actions
However, Ramadhar said it does not mean
that Ramsaran has been expelled from the
party. He said forfeited means you have
given up your right. "So we will speak with
him because he has been one of the foun-
dation members of the COP. But we need
to establish now clear lines of authority."
Ramadhar said the COP did not give
Ramsaran its blessings to be screened.
"It would be highly inappropriate,"
He said he discussed it with Prime Min-
ister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and it was
agreed that the seat should be fought by a
UNC candidate, having agreed to the Fyz-
"It would be wrong for any member to
suggest that they can do otherwise."
The UNC s constitution, Ramadhar said,
also forbade Ramsaran from being screened.
"So unfortunately, he fell with the best
of intent to bad circumstances."
