The water taxi service from Port-of-Spain to
Chaguaramas began regular sailings yesterday,
offering $20 round trips.
The transfer point for passengers is La Soufriere,
next to the Chaguaramas Heliport on the Western
Main Road, Chaguaramas. For now, however, the
service will only be available on weekends.
Officials at the National Infrastructure Development
Company Limited (Nidco) and the Chaguaramas
Development Authority (CDA), partners on the project,
say they expect daily sailings to begin as early as
The service was launched on Saturday with a voyage
from the Water Taxi terminal to Chaguaramas.
Planning Minister Bhoe Tewarie, line minister for
the CDA, said: "I am just happy that this thing has
happened. We have been talking about this for the
past ten months. So many people in a small country
of 1.3 million people have never had this view of the
island that we are having today. To me, that is a sit-
uation of great deprivation and of unnecessary impo-
sition of limits to the human imagination."
He added: "Just as the CDA has the zip-line which
according to reports is attracting huge daily interest
even in the absence of much marketing, we can have
cable cars in this country and for strategic purposes.
Wherever you start the cable car, you are going to
create a business opportunity and wherever the cable
car ends, you are going to create a business oppor-
tunity. You have the boardwalk and you have literally
scores of business opportunities and when they put
the jetty out, you are going to have scores of business
Tewarie said there is need for T&T to set up a
more robust and reliable transit system.
"I know what we have already achieved and I know
what we can achieve but you ve got to create the
conditions to allow for the possibilities to be captured,"
"I see this as a very important opening up of the
country. You now have the opportunity to pick up
what is essentially a taxi, a water taxi in Port-of-
Spain go to Chaguaramas, spend the day. What is
important about that is, what we have been doing
over the past couple of years is building things for
people to do in Chaguaramas. The boardwalk is one
Tewarie said, "We are going to create a whole
pedestrian and cycling area by diverting the road.
We have arranged that with the Ministry of Works
(and Infrastructure) and they are going to start soon.
It s an opportunity for clean quality enjoyment and
companionship and friendship and community build-
ing that is going to open up."
From left, Daniel Solomon, CDA chairman, Dr Bhoendradatt Tewarie, Minister of
Planning and Sustainable Development, and his grandson, Joycelin Hargreaves
CEO, CDA, and Sharon Taylor, project director, Water Taxi Service of Nidco, cut
the ribbon to inaugurate the first journey to Chaguaramas at the Water Taxi
terminal in Port-of-Spain, on Saturday.
