A person’s risk of heart disease could be halved—
at the least—by controlling high blood pressure and
high cholesterol, but this feat is only accomplished
by fewer than one in three people, according to a
new study in the journal Circulation.
Researchers reviewed data from more than 17,000
American adults who participated in the National
Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys during
1988-94, 1999-2004 and 2005-10. Researchers
assessed their blood pressure and cholesterol levels
as well as other potential heart risk factors including
race, age, presence of other diseases (like diabetes),
doctor visit frequency, insurance status and smoking
Researchers found that the demographic that would
best benefit from being prescribed blood pressure or
cholesterol medication were older Americans with
diabetes or heart disease, or who are Hispanic or
African-American. Additionally, researchers found a
link between visiting the doctor at least twice a year
and controlled blood pressure and cholesterol.
This finding corroborates an earlier study published
in the Annals of Emergency Medicine, in which
researchers found that nine in ten African-American
YOUR DAILY HEALTH
News and advice
Controlling high blood pressure and high cholesterol can halve the risk of heart
Bad news, restless sleepers: your nightly session
of disjointed z’s may be leading to more anxiety and
stress during the day, according to a recent study.
A small study looked at the effects of sleep
deprivation on participants’ anxiety levels and found
they were much higher after a sleepless night than a
well-rested one. Here are a few sleep habits that
may be making your stress levels skyrocket.
n Hitting the snooze button: Not only is your
snoozing habit disrupting your sleep cycle, but
delaying getting out of bed can also cause you to
rush through your morning—talk about stress. Try to
forgo the snooze button and instead set your alarm
for the time you have to get up. Free phone apps or
fitness trackers that wake you up at the best point in
your sleep cycle can help as well.
n Going to sleep at different times: Constantly
changing when you go to bed or wake up can be the
cause of sleep deprivation, since you’re not preparing
your body for sleep with a relaxing routine. Try to
stick to the same bedtime and wake-up time no
matter what the day in order to establish a
nighttime routine that will help lull yourself into a
n Not making sleep a priority: Some days, you
wish there were endless hours in a day, but pulling
all-nighters to catch up on your to-do list isn’t
sustainable or healthy. Ensure you get at least seven
hours of sleep every night by giving yourself a cutoff
time when it comes to dealing with that stressful
errand list in the evenings.
Ways to help halve
heart disease risks
patients with high blood pressure also suffered from
heart disease caused by high blood pressure.
The findings are important considering about a
third of Americans have high LDL (“bad”) cholesterol,
according to the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention. Furthermore, only about a third of those
patients with high cholesterol have their condition
under control. (Huffington Post)
