STANFORD --- Olga Govortsova,
ranked 83rd in the world, ended
a frustrating run of results with
a convincing 6-2, 6-4 victory
over No. 2 seed Samantha Stosur
in the second round at the Bank
of the West Classic on Tuesday.

Stosur falls to 83rd

advanced to the Swiss Open quar-
terfinals yesterday by beating Daniel
Gimeno-Traver of Spain, 7-5, 7-6
Wawrinka was cruising at 4-0 up
in the second set, then failed to serve
out the match at 5-3 before clinching
victory in the tiebreaker.
Seeded players won all four sec-
ond-round matches, one day before
top-seeded Roger Federer begins his
campaign in the clay-court event
against Daniel Brands of Germany.
Fourth-seeded Juan Monaco of
Argentina eased past Guillermo Gar-

of the draw as Federer.
Youzhny, the No. 6 seed, beat his
second-round opponent Pablo Andu-
jar of Spain, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
Fifth-seeded Feliciano Lopez of
Spain won 6-4, 6-3 against Andrey
Kuznetsov of Russia to set up a quar-
terfinal against Wawrinka.

advance at Swiss Open
UMAG --- Third-seeded Fabio
Fognini of Italy and sixth-seeded
Martin Klizan of Slovenia advanced
to the quarterfinals of the Croatia
Fognini defeated Thiemo de Bakker
of the Netherlands 7-5, 6-3, while
Klizan rallied to beat Leonardo Mayer
of Argentina 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (3).
Fognini made several unforced
errors at the start of the match to
hand de Bakker a 5-1 lead, but then
won nine consecutive games to take
Fognini earned his 11th consecutive
singles victory, after winning titles in
Stuttgart and Hamburg.
"I was not consistent at the begin-
ning, obviously I did not play great
tennis, but after 10 matches in a row
in two weeks it could be expected,"
Fognini said. "I started slow, then I
started to fight for every point."
Klizan was up 4-1 in the third set,
then failed to serve out the match at
6-5 before clinching the win in the
Mayer jumped out to a 4-1 lead at
the start, but Klizan won ten out of
12 games after dropping the first set.
