The quartet of former national
women s champion Brittany Joseph,
Aaron Wilson, Shaquille Mitchell and
Dylita Maharaj all repeated as cham-
pions when T&T Table-Tennis Asso-
ciations hosted a Junior Singles tour-
nament at the Central Regional Indoor
Sport Arena on Sunday.
The one-day comeptition featured
some of the top young local players
and two USA based juniors, brother
and sister, Dylita and Shiva Maharaj,
the children former T&T player and
2006 national champion Dayanand
Maharaj and capped a great weekend
for the quartet who were also victorious
at the Ministry of Sport Youth Festival
of Sport table-tennis competition on
The 2012 national women s champion
and senior national team player, Joseph
topped the Under-21 girls competition
when she came from behind to beat
Ambika Sitram 7-11, 14-12, 11-7, 19-17
to end the three-player round-robin
series with a 2-0 record. Ambika was
second with a 1-1 mark while Renuka
Sitram was third with a 0-2 mark.
Likewise, the boys Under-21 three-
players decider came down to a win-
ner-take-all encounter in which
Lawrence Ince prevailed over Davone
Joseph 11-6, 4-11, 11-8, 11-9 while Sid-
diq Ramsingh (0-2) was third.
In the boys Under-18 age-group, top
junior, Wilson eased past Sarvesh Mun-
gal 11-8, 11-5, 11-8 while Mitchell
stopped Amresh Mungal 11-4, 11-9, 11-
5 in the Under-15 boys final
And in the Under-15 girls round-
robin, Maharaj upstaged national Cadet
player Gyshan Latchman; 11-6, 11-8,
11-3 with another Cadet team member,
Danielle Dick, third,
In the other age-group to be con-
tested ona round-robin basis, Shreya
Maharaj defeated Shyana Samnarine
11-9, 11-8, 9-11, 11-3 to end with a 2-
0 record while Rayanna Boodhan, got
The two other winners on the day
were Brandon Lee Young and Brandon
Beharry in the Under-11 and Under-13
Dylan Lee (11-6, 11-1, 11-4) and Jessie
Dookie (11-2, 11-4, 11-6), respectively.
The T&T Under-11 and Under-13
table tennis squad will leave for
Guyana tomorrow to participate in
the eighth Caribbean Pre Cadet Table
The team will be vying for medals
in all four categories: teams, doubles,
mixed doubles and singles.
The players will be accompanied by
a management team of five comprising
coaches Dexter Abbott, Simon Spicer
and Jasper De Gannes, manager,
Gayanand Sitram and chaperone, Emlyn
In addition, some parents and others
will travel to lend support to the play-
ers.Some members of the Trinidad con-
tingent travelled to Tobago three week-
ends ago to meet the Tobagonians for
a joint training session.
Coach Spicer expressed confidence
in the strength of this year s team, not-
ing that ten of the 16 players earned
medals when the competition was held
in Jamaica last year. The haul in 2012
was four silver and three bronze medals.
