Dear Customers and Shareholders
I bring greetings and best wishes to you on
behalf of the Board of Directors on the
achievement of our 50th Anniversary. The
theme for celebrating this milestone is "50
Years of Serving You".
Insurance is one of the few industries in exis-
tence that involves "sacred trust" and a prom-
ise to be there for our clients & policyholders in
their time of need. This need may be in the
short term in the case of property protection,
or span decades as in the case of Life Insur-
Over the past 50 years, the industry has en-
dured many changes, new market entrants,
company closures, intervention and increased
vigilance by our Regulator, and development of
new guidelines and laws.
The new Insurance Bill is now being consid-
ered for implementation and this will establish
and enhance the standards required to run an
efficient and stable industry.
We welcome this change and will continue to
be prudent in our management and look for-
ward to a stable financial future. TATIL contin-
ues to maintain an A(-) "Excellent" Rating by
rating agency A.M. Best.
To the Executives, Management and to each
staff member, I say thanks to you for your very
significant contribution over the years.
I would like to take this opportunity to recog-
nise the efforts of the past Chairmen, Manag-
ing Directors and staff for your contribution in
laying the foundation for our achievements
I would like to thank my fellow Directors on
the Boards of TATIL & TATIL Life, for your sup-
port and guidance.
Finally, I would like to thank all our Cus-
tomers for your patronage and trust in us. Our
commitment and promise to you is one that
exists in our core beliefs in which we value and
We look forward to serving you for the next
I remember the telephone call I re-
ceived on a Friday afternoon a few years
ago from my Group Chairman, Mr. A. Nor-
man Sabga, to advise of my appointment
to the position of Managing Director of
TATIL. My immediate reaction was not
one of joy or celebration, but an overpow-
ering feeling of being humbled, not for
the confidence that was entrusted in me,
but more so, for being considered to lead
this iconic and historic Company.
This year TATIL celebrates its 50th /
Golden anniversary, and it is my absolute
honour to write this message as the Man-
aging Director of TATIL, a Company with a
deep rich history, of culture; leadership;
success which it has enjoyed throughout
the past five decades.
What started off as an idea amongst a
group of businessmen on the heels of the
Nation achieving its Independence was the
formation of a legacy Company, and one of
the first locally owned Companies regis-
tered in the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago
to conduct business as a General Insurer,
our exact registration date being 15th
TATIL became a part of the ANSA McAL
Group of Companies, when Dr. Anthony N.
Sabga, Chairman Emeritus of the ANSA
McAL Group of Companies, and current
Chairman of TATIL and TATIL Life, ac-
quired the Mc Enearney Alston's Limited
Group. Some eighteen years later in 2004,
TATIL was acquired by ANSA Merchant
Bank Limited, as part of the ANSA McAL
Group's business alignment strategies.
Dr. Anthony N. Sabga
ORTT, Chairman Emeritus ANSA MCAL
Limited, Chairman of TATIL and TATIL
Our Chairman requires no introduction,
given his status of Nation Icon, Philan-
thropic citizen, Business Entrepreneur par
excellence. Like others before me, I have
the personal pleasure of working under the
distinguished leadership of Dr. Sabga.
"Honest, Integrity and Determination to
succeed" are the values that he has lived
by and are evident in the trail of business
success stories of his career. Fueled by the
mantra of "never being afraid to make a
decision", it comes as no surprise that
TATIL has prospered under his leadership.
In keeping with the theme of perform-
ance, a glimpse of the statistics for the
past 50 years exhibits what has been
achieved from 1963 to 2012:
Premium income has grown from
$634,000 to $300Million; Claims paid in-
creased from $111,000 to $70Million, and
Profit before tax increasing from $245,000
to over $85Million.
TATIL's Balance Sheet size and Net Pre-
mium income ranks second highest in the
industry, and for the past 5-years, we have
achieved and have maintained an A.M.
Best rating of (A-) "Excellent".
In 2012, TATIL received the ANSA McAL
Group Performance award for the Com-
pany with the "Highest PBT achievement
Then and Now
Fifty years of existence and success is
not possible without loyalty, commitment,
dedication, belief, and trust. Characteristics
found in any long lasting relationship.
To our dear customers, we the Manage-
ment and Staff thank you for your continu-
ous support and loyalty, without you this
would not be possible.
To our staff members, both past & pres-
ent, thank you for your service and never -
ending support over the years.
Despite of not having the pleasure of
meeting Mr. Louis Rostant, it would be re-
miss of me not to recognise him as the
first Managing Director and leader of
In terms of my personal involvement and
tenure as MD, special mention to recent
past MD's - Mr. Ray Sumairsingh and Mr.
Gerry Brooks, who have both played critical
roles in different stages of TATIL's history,
and continue to play significant roles as Di-
rectors of both TATIL & TATIL Life.
In closing I would like to thank our Chair-
man, Dr. Sabga, past & current Directors of
TATIL & TATIL Life, business associates,
partners, agents and the long list of those
who I could not make special mention.
