LONDON---England coach Roy Hodgson
rewarded Andros Townsend and Ross Barkley
for their strong starts to the season by calling
them up for the first time yesterday for key
World Cup qualifiers.
Townsend, a 22-year-old Tottenham winger,
was selected three months after being sanctioned
by the English Football Association for betting
breaches and pulling out of the under-21 squad
for the European Championship.
"He was on our radar before the under-21s
tournament and has started so well for Totten-
ham," Hodgson said.
Barkley, a 19-year-old midfielder, has already
scored for Everton this season.
"We have given ourselves a chance to look at
players who have a bright future and are capable
of making an impact," Hodgson said.
Rickie Lambert, a 31-year-old Southampton
striker, retained his place in the squad for the
Moldova and Ukraine qualifiers at the start of
September after scoring the winner on his England
debut earlier this month against Scotland.
Daniel Sturridge, who has scored the winner
in each of Liverpool s games so far this season,
returns to the squad after missing the Scotland
friendly through injury. Jermain Defoe retains his
place among the striking options despite not
starting yet for Tottenham this season.
England is second in its qualifying group, two
points behind Montenegro with five matches

STOCKHOLM---Sweden coach Erik
Hamren picked a team without any
surprises yesterday for next month s
World Cup qualifiers against Ireland
and Kazakhstan, with strikers Zlatan
Ibrahimovic and Johan Elmander set
to spearhead the attack.
Sweden travels to Dublin on Sep-
tember 6 for a match that could go a
long way toward determining second
place in Group C, and then visits Kaza-
khstan four days later.
With midfielder Rasmus Elm injured,
Hamren s 24-man team includes Kim
Kallstrom and Alexander Kacaniklic,
who has returned from an injury. PSV
Eindhoven forward Ola Toivonen is also
included while defender Andreas
Granqvist was also tapped but is sus-
pended against Ireland.
Sweden lost its latest qualifier in June
to Austria 2-1 after a disappointing
showing that put the Austrians in sec-
ond place in Group C behind Germany,
which has 16 points. Sweden, Austria,
and Ireland each have 11 points with
the Austrians ahead on goal difference.
ACCRA---Michael Essien and Kevin-
Prince Boateng returned from long
international breaks yesterday to be
named in Ghana s squad for next
month s crucial World Cup qualifier
at home to Zambia.
The pair, who have hardly played for
Ghana since the World Cup in South
Africa in 2010, were joined by Andre
Ayew. He was back in contention after
being dropped at the start of the year.
Essien, who is on loan at Real Madrid
from Premier League club Chelsea, has
missed almost all of Ghana s games
since the 2010 World Cup through a
combination of serious knee injuries
and a sabbatical. As a result, he was
absent from the last three major tour-
naments for his country: the World
Cup and African Cups in 2012 and 2013.
Boateng retired from internationals
in 2011 but the AC Milan midfielder
said in a letter to the Ghana Football
Association last week he was now avail-
able again with the World Cup in Brazil
less than a year away. (AP)
