selectors have included captain
Michael Clarke and Shane Wat-
son in October s seven-match
one-day series in India, while
the high-profile trio of David
Warner, Matthew Wade and
Fawad Ahmed were omitted.
Australia named a 14-man
squad yesterday that also
includes Mitchell Johnson,
George Bailey, James Faulkner
and Phil Hughes, who will all
be pushing their case to play in
the opening Ashes test at Bris-
bane's Gabba in November.
The India tour opens with a
Twenty20 match on October 10.
Clarke was troubled by back
problems throughout Australia's
recent Ashes tour of England
and said Wednesday he was
"stiff and sore" following the
three-month trip. Watson was
also hampered by hip and groin
"After a long tour, Michael
Clarke's back condition has
flared up again and he has been
selected subject to fitness,"
national selector John Inverarity
said in a statement.
Australia lost the Ashes test
series 3-0 but won the weath-
er-affected one-day series 2-1
Warner, dropped from the
one-day portion of the Ashes
series due to poor form, has
failed to earn a recall, while

was also dropped.

CHESTER-LE-STEEET---Durham won its third Eng-
lish county championship in six years yesterday,
regaining the title on its home ground by beating
Nottinghamshire by eight wickets.
The cash-strapped north-east side captained by
former England allrounder Paul Collingwood and
containing current internationals Graham Onions
and Ben Stokes dodged the showers to score the 62
runs it needed for victory in Chester-le-Street, which
ensured the team cannot be caught by second-place
Yorkshire with one match remaining.
Durham, which won the league title in 2008 and
'09, did it the hard way this season, deciding not to
employ an overseas player and starting off with a
2.5-point penalty for breaching salary-cap regulations.
Its coach, Geoff Cook, then suffered a heart attack
in June, forcing a coaching reshuffle.
Stokes says "we did it for Geoff."
METZ---Nicolas Mahut of France upset third-seed-
ed Andreas Seppi of Italy 6-4, 6-4 to reach the
Moselle Open quarterfinals yesterday.
Mahut broke last year's runner-up twice in each
set. The Frenchman won two titles in the summer
and is enjoying his best season. Frenchman Gilles
Simon and German duo Florian Mayer and Benjamin
Becker also advanced to the last eight.
The second-seeded Simon cruised past compatriot
Kenny De Schepper 6-2, 6-3, while the eighth-
seeded Mayer did not face any break points in his
6-3, 6-2 victory over Lukas Lacko of Slovakia, and
Becker outlasted French wild card Albano Olivetti
6-7 (8), 6-3, 6-1.
Simon, a 2010 champion, jumped to 4-0. De
Schepper raised his game in the second set but failed
to convert two break points. Simon broke serve for
a 4-3 lead before clinching the victory when De
Schepper's forehand went wide.
Ranked 254th in the world, Olivetti rallied from
6-2 down in the tiebreaker to win the opening set.
But Becker broke Olivetti twice in the next set to
even the match. The German took leads of 3-0 and
5-1 in the third set.
