cause we love Him and we too
become loving. We adore God
to merge with Him and we too
merge with and empathize
with the rest of humanity.
Human beings lose the ability
to merge their selves with God
as they find it easier to merge
themselves with external mate
rial things to sa sfy their pas
sions and desires. Humanity has
learnt and understood the laws
of the material world to sa sfy
its urges and desires but failed
to learn and understand the
laws that would conquer one's
lower passions and desires and
lead one to a higher happiness
and a be er life.
Humankind has not conquered
nature it has enslaved it. In do
ing so it has failed to use the
nature of the world outside to
develop each person's own na
ture within so that it can merge
with the Divine Nature. Human
personality and character must
be developed and enhanced to
be adored. As we improve our
personality, others love us and
we in turn love them. As we
increase in the love of humani
ty, we do acts of goodness to
wards others. It is then we see
eye to eye with them and em
pathize with them. We become
one with them, sharing in their
joys and in their sorrows.
Through worship, the Prophet
is called Ahmad "the One prais
ing God" (61:6) and then a Lov
er to the world (21:107) and
then an emulator, an exemplar
of Divine a ributes (33:21).
Worship is essen al in every
religion. But why must we wor
ship God? What is the reason
and purpose for worship? The
reason for worship is to see
eye to eye with God, to bring
our will into sync with His Will.
Worship is not mere adora on
or glorifica on of God. It is not
enough to u er al Hamdu lil
laah Hallowed be Thy Name.
All worship has three require
1. A rac on
3. Possession or Emula on.
A rac on gives pleasure. We
adore what gives us pleasure.
Adora on increases to love. We
love a place, a flower, an idea, a
person or an object etc.
Love encourages ac on. A lover
would visit the place loved, or
pick the flower. A loved dog
would be pe ed. Love of an
idea causes the study of it.
Possession, emula on or imita
on is the final stage. The lover
desires to own the place, to
keep the flower, to be inside of
or own the lovely car, to be a
look alike or to emulate the
sports person, singer, hero etc.
Worship begins with an a rac
on. Then it leads to a love
which impels us to some ac on.
Eventually, it impresses on us
the need to imitate, possess or
emulate the object that is
loved, desiring to be one with it
to merge with it or to want to
acquire it or keep it or be in it.
These same three require
ments apply in the worship of
God. We are first a racted to
God as He has beau ful a rib
utes (the Qur'an 59:24). This
a rac on is so powerful it gives
us pleasure to adore Allah and
His a ributes. We praise Him
and this increases to love for
God (2:165) and leads to ac
ons --- our ges cula ons, our
bowing, our u erances of
words of praise, even our acts
of charity. Constant worship of
God develops the yearning to
merge with Him. We want to
be with God. We want to know
God, to see eye to eye with God
and to be in sync with His Will
such that our hands, feet, eyes
and thoughts are in accordance
with the Divine Will.
This is Islam total submission
to the Will of Allah as the
Lord's prayer states: "Thy will
be done." We worship God to
become one with God. We imi
tate God by imita ng the a rib
utes of God. We are command
ed imbue yourselves with Di
vine a ributes (2:138). The rea
son for worship then is to ena
ble us to ul mately acquire the
a ributes of God.
True worship is focussing our
mind on Allah (6:79). The pur
pose of worship and the reason
for prayer is to bring about the
merging with the Divine Being.
There is a God whom we need
to adore as He is beau ful. By
adoring God we too become
beau ful as we acquire His
a ributes. We adore God be

Jesus' return brings Muslims and Christians into
