For the first time since coming
into existence in 2008, Team HOPE
will be making back-to-back appear-
ances at the Rainbow Cup triathlon
HOPE is the acronym for How
Ordinary People do Extraordinary
things, and that is exactly what the
team was able to accomplish in 2009,
2011 and 2013. HOPE took approx-
imately 50 people with mental and
physical disabilities and got them
ready to compete in and complete the
triathlon in Tobago.
Previously, Team HOPE made their
presence felt every two years but after
the success and momentum in 2013,
a decision was made by Team HOPE s
umbrella body, the T&T Occupational
Therapy Association (TTOTA) to go
at it again in 2014. Reason being,
occupational therapy continues to
languish in the healthcare background
and the strides that are being made
in raising the awareness of this pro-
fession need to be maintained.
The mission of Team HOPE is to
raise awareness of the need for full
occupational therapy services for the
people of T&T.
Team HOPE has recruited 56 people
who will take up the challenge of
completing the triathlon in June 2014.
Last Sunday, Team HOPE held its
Meet the Team event at NALIS, where
Hopees were brought up to speed
with what will be required of them
for the coming seven months.
Priya Gomes, occupational therapist
and Team HOPE cordinator stated:
"Occupational Therapists are health
care professionals who help people
across their lifespan to participate in
the tasks they want and need to do
through the therapeutic use of every-
day activities (occupations).
"It is our belief that persons have
a right to full participation in com-
munity life despite mental or physical
health status or disability."
Hopees also met some of the
coaches and mentors who would be
guiding them through their training
sessions on their way to becoming
Michael Nyarko, the Masters swim
coach from T&T Aquatics, underlined
his association s commitment to the
cause by presenting a $8,000 donation
to Team HOPE.
Hopees and honoured teammates
received tokens of appreciation from
TTOTA for their commitment to
Team HOPE 2014.
