Tidal Bay heads a total of 41 entries to stand their
ground for Saturday s Coral Welsh National at Chep-
Paul Nicholls charge is set to shoulder top weight
of 11st 12lb in the stamina-sapping marathon, with
the 12-year-old having to concede upwards of 10lb
to all his rivals if he runs.
Next in the list is Teaforthree, who finished a cred-
itable second 12 months ago before going on to be
third behind Auroras Encore in the Grand National
Gary Moore s Well Refreshed currently heads the
market with the sponsors, and Jim Dreaper s Goonyella
and the Emma Lavelle-trained Highland Lodge, who
finished fourth in the Hennessy, are also towards the
Donald McCain has left in Sydney Paget, although
he is also declared at Wetherby on Boxing Day, while
other leading fancies include Hawkes Point and Merry
Moutainous, Alfie Sherrin, De La Bech and Goulanes
are other notable names still among the possibles.
"As always in the Coral Welsh National, stamina
and an ability to go on testing ground will be required
in abundance, and Well Refreshed has proved he has
both, although Gary Moore s charge is by no means
certain to start favourite, with Goonyella, Highland
Lodge and Merry King all popular in recent days,"
said Coral s David Stevens.

There will be a big soca party on Boxing Day at
Santa Rosa Park, Arima, when five fillies line up
for the Grade One Republic Mortgages St Ann s
Stakes for West Indian bred two-year-old fillies
over 1,350 metres.
Punters and turfites alike, will be coming to the
centralised venue to witness the performance of top
filly Soca Rhapsody. This filly, fondly known as "fat-
girl," has won the hearts of all who have seen her
on the main track and a treat looks in the making
come Boxing Day.
The Anthony Nunes trained filly has scared away
the opposition after her scintillating victory by 14
1/2 lengths on her debut and it will take a super
performance by one of her rivals to get close to her.
Wilmer Galviz has the arm-chair ride and should
win doing handsprings.
The only horse with a semblance of a chance to
get Soca Rhapsody into second gear is the Glenn
Mendez-trained Maranza which was second on both
her starts. This filly has shown ability and will again
attempt to make a race of it with her conqueror but
this seems an impossible task. The other three runners
cannot worry the two principals in the $150,000
In the Republic Online St James Stakes also over
the distance of 1,350 metres, a big clash is anticipated
with the clash between two unbeaten colts
Momentum and Dark Treasure.
The former, trained by champion trainer
John O Brien, won impressively on his debut
by 7 1/2 lengths and looks set to be one of
the leading lights in the juvenile arena. The
manner in which he quickened clear when
asked in his only start makes him a horse
for the future. He has been drawn in the
dreadful stall one but he has the class to
win for Brian Boodramsing.
The biggest challenger to Momentum is
the highly touted and supremely impressive
wide margin Glenn Mendez-trained two-
year-old debut winner Dark Treasure. This
debutant scored in great style when romping
home by 14 1/2 length one week ago and
looks set to be one of the better juvenile
though lugging in in the closing stages.
Galviz has the ride and this colt could be
Harold Chadee has two entrants in the
event, in Eye See You and All For The Haul,
and both are expected to run big races. Eye
See You won well on his debut but was put
firmly in his place last time out and it will
take a miracle for him to topple the top two.
He has been "prepping well" but could again
be found wanting.
All For The Haul must have an outside
chance and could be a better three-year-
old, however, he could surprise and finish
Top rider Emile Ramsammy will be aboard
the Sharon Ferreira trained Country Boy
which won the first juvenile event for the
season. That day he pulled clear majestically
from 400 metres out but was very disap-
pointing last time out.
On the bare form he will have it all to do
to get the better of Momentum and Dark
