HAPPY NEW YEAR
An Indian reveller poses on New Year's Eve in Amritsar. GETTY IMAGES
As has become the tradition, citizens by the
thousand are beginning to ring in the new
year with a bang (no pun intended) and many
people are already extending best wishes and the
hope for a better 2014.
The Police Service has made a rather silly pro-
nouncement that firecrackers are illegal and we
can call them in the event of a nuisance. Do they
expect citizens who purchased their firecrackers
to the tune of thousands of dollars to just desist
Be that as it may, it is difficult for me to bleat
the "Happy New Year" on the basis that too
many lives have been lost and there have been
too many atrocities committed against the chil-
dren and the environment.
I simply cannot shake the heaviness brought
on by the loss of life in the last year and moreso
the last two weeks in December beginning with
the death of Nelson Mandela.
This is not the way to ring in a new and pros-
perous new year. Alas, the sight of party-goers
merrily counting down 2013 into 2014 just
doesn t jell with the sight of a destroyed man-
grove or a spoilt beach or a mother who sets
herself on fire.
I can t ignore the sadness that permeates this
nation, despite the best efforts of the Govern-
ment to lift the standard of living.
Add to the above the situation in La Brea and
environs brought on by the oil spills. While
much is being done to alleviate the plight of the
citizens, the environment is still being negatively
affected. There still remains a thick residue on
the beachfront and in the ocean and in the eco-
sensitive lagoon. This must be addressed.
What I would like to see happen is that urgent
action be taken to beautify, clean and reclaim the
Sea Lots jetty which is the stinkiest piece of
water front at the entrance to the city of Port-
of-Spain and all those derelict junk ships in the
Gulf be removed.
So, I thank the media for highlighting my
concerns and crave the kindest indulgence if I
don t offer any happy new year trite. God Bless
JUST CAN'T WISH A TRITE 'HAPPY NEW YEAR'

I would like to thank Dr Poon King for all that he is
doing for the patients at that institution, and I pray that
young doctors, many of whom see medicine as a

man for never giving up hope, and for continuing to be
there at his side. They are examples of love and support
for other families in similar circumstances to follow.

Killing of the blind
a dastardly deed
Persons Associated with Visual Impairment (PAVI),
on behalf of the community of persons with visual im-
pairment, condemns the act of murder, perpetrated
against Curtis Lewis, who was visually impaired.
He was known in the community by many, who to-
gether with the rest are saddened by this outrageous
act. PAVI extends its sympathies to the members of
Anyone with a visual impairment who travels
around independently, is defencelessly exposed to the
criminal elements of our national community. It is a
very sad day indeed when someone could kill a man
who is blind in his state of helplessness. A man who
could not put up any kind of resistance or even at-
tempt to run away. He would not have seen it coming
to even plead for his life. It hurts! Couldn't mercy have
been showed here?
PAVI pleads with those involved in a life of crime to
show mercy upon our community of persons with dis-
abilities, our elderly, our children and citizens as a
whole. PAVI calls for an end to the destruction of life,
the life of a neighbour, a loved one, a dear friend.
