The season is here, and Mr. Fete is
back! It's no surprise that we are in for
a long Carnival season (yay) but what
has been a surprise is the fact that the
season has started with such a bang!
The Romans of Caesar's Army took it
from zero to sixty when they gave us a
taste of a big, stink, truck on the road as
early as Boxing Day, at LUSH. This was fol-
lowed soon after by what many consider to
be the fete to start the festivities, Tribe
ICE. This last weekend continued the pace,
with no signs of slowing down.
I had my first taste of Black to Blue, held
by Illusions Mas. This year the popular
event moved from the Southland to Cen-
tral...land. For those of you that still may
not know (those living West of the light
house) Black to Blue is a cooler event, and
is so named because it starts in the pre-
dawn, 1 am to be specific, and goes until
we are able to see the blue morning skies.
We got down to the venue, the Ato Boldon
stadium, at approximately 3 am and the
party was in full swing with a solid crowd.
Interestingly enough, the fete has a strong
following from a lot of West patrons, big up
to the Scorch crew, the Sahara crew and
the Caesar's Army crew that came out in
The performances began soon after with
the line up of some of the usual Soca sus-
pects to inject some extra energy into the
crowd. Shal and Jaiga had the crowd
pumping and Kerwin DuBois gave a strong
performance that no doubt is the signal to
an amazing season ahead. The highlight of
course was the Viking himself Mr. Garlin
who, just when I thought couldn't amaze
me further, did just that. Bunji came onto
the stage and freestyled to inform the
crowd that his DJ's laptop was stolen and
they would have to improvise, which they
did beautifully. Thirty minutes into the per-
formance however, a member of the secu-
rity personnel walked onto the stage and
handed Bunji the now recovered knapsack.
It was handed to DJ Ding Dong who tri-
umphantly raised his laptop to the sky,
plugged in, and the performance went into
At this event, the big, stink truck took
the form of a water truck that doused pa-
trons as the sun rose. The event ended as
it should, with a riddim section jamming
and breakfast being served to patrons.
Even at nine in the morning, it was tough
getting the party people to leave the event.
The vibes of this event was a slow burn,
taking its time, but it was well worth it at
the end. Much respect to the Illusions crew
for a job well done, it was my first, but it
certainly won't be my last! Henceforth
Black to Blue nah miss mih!
The Scorch crew was pumping at Illusions Back2Blue
Coolers, heavy showers and
Machel Montano's first perform-
ance with the full HD band all com-
bined to launch Fantasy Carnival's
2014 season last Saturday at the
Queen's Park Oval. Excited pa-
trons rolled in, along with coolers,
in droves and pretty much on time
in anticipation of what promised
to be an exciting night.
There is definitely nothing quite like
walking into the Oval for a fete to sig-
nal that the Carnival has truly begun!
Decor, in the theme of Fantasy's 2K14
presentation "Secrets of the Deep"
were only equalled by the beautiful
people in attendance, the ladies defi-
nitely put their best feet, shoes and
outfits forward for this one.
Coolers were positioned, drinks
poured and 'd ting start', with per-
formances from 5 Star Akil, Shal, Jaiga
and Lyrikal all leading up to the
biggest reveal of the night, the one we
were all there for, Mr. Montano and full
HD family. At approximately 2 a.m.
the self proclaimed happiest man alive
took to the stage performing the very
song that is also his newest identity.
He was met by a large mass of the
happiest people alive feeding off of his
positive energy and vibe. Machel him-
self had something new to reveal to
the eager patrons, as he introduced
the revamped HD dancers, many new
faces, lots of new moves. The new
dance team from Zen Arts, LA, is defi-
nitely visually appealing, if you know
what I mean, and well choreographed,
although I did miss the unique talents
In the midst of the usual energetic
performance from Double M, the skies
opened to reveal their secret, a bless-
ing of showers that sent some run-
ning for shelter, that had some well
prepared patrons wining under um-
brellas, but that had most jumping,
dancing, wining and rejoicing in it. To
be honest however, the showers really
were a blessing, without them, the
event never really seemed to have
that momentum to fully take it over
the edge. A bit of "epicness" was lack-
ing throughout the night, and the
event never really seemed to peak. It
also seemed to end a little too
abruptly as well, the music quickly
winding down at almost exactly 4 am
on the dot with no warning, announce-
ments, or "thank yous", and not a rid-
dim section to be found in sight to
wind down the energy and usher pa-
trons out the venue.
We are feters to we heart however,
and we create our vibes, so through it
all, as long as waist lines were moving,
coolers were accessible, drinks stayed
filled, patrons enjoyed every secret re-
vealed on the night.
The Happiest Man Alive, Machel Montano, debuted new dancers at Fantasy's Secret Garden on Saturday.
