Health Minister Dr Fuad Khan has appealed to
pregnant women to follow the advice of their doc-
tors and nurses.
His comment comes in the wake of the death of
pregnant mother Sally Khan, 37, earlier this week.
Khan died before getting to the Mayaro Health
Facility after she collapsed at home. Her baby boy
also died in her womb. An autopsy revealed she
had suffered a heart attack.
Khan, the mother of a four-year-old girl, suffered
from hypertension and gestational diabetes.
Initially, relatives had said she was pregnant with
twins but a release from the Eastern Regional Health
Authority said she was carrying one child. That
was confirmed when only one baby was removed
from her uterus during an autopsy at the Forensic
Science Centre on Wednesday.
Her relatives, however, believe the baby could
have been saved if the health facility was properly
equipped to do Caesarean sections.
In a telephone interview on Wednesday, the min-
ister said he was still awaiting a full report. He said

The woman s relatives said she was regularly
attending a prenatal clinic at the Sangre Grande
Hospital and was doing well.
Dr Khan has assured that the Mayaro Health
Facility will be upgraded.
"Because of the large population now and
the increase in the number of cars, access (to
Sangre Grande hospital) is difficult," he said.
"All the facilities, operating theatre, specialist
should be done in that area (Mayaro)."
Khan said his ministry intends to construct
a new hospital in Rio Claro because of limited
space in Mayaro, but the Mayaro facility will
be upgraded to handle maternal, paediatrics
and small surgical procedures.
The funeral for Sally Khan and her baby
was held yesterday.
High-risk pregnancy precautions
Asked if Sally should have been hospitalised,
given her condition, the health minister said: "If
all those things were happening, she should have
been in the hospital until the delivery."
However, Khan said sometimes pregnant
women ignored medical advice.
"I am appealing to all pregnant women early or
late in their pregnancy to make sure they listen
to their doctors' and nurses' advice and do what
they tell you to do. It is in your interest."
Asked what precautions should be taken in
high-risk pregnancies, gynaecologist Dr Krishna
Rampersadsingh, who has dealt with extremely
complicated pregnancies, said it depended on the
patient's condition, but they must be closely
monitored and in some cases required
In high-risk pregnancies, he said, women are
required to attend clinic every four weeks up to
28 weeks into the pregnancy, then every two
weeks up until 36 weeks, and then every week
