BARCELONA---Hector Moreno s late goal gave
10-man Espanyol a 1-0 win at home over Granada
in the Spanish league yesterday, as the Barcelona-
based side ended a two-match winless run.
Granada goalkeeper Roberto Fernandez saved
Moreno s first two headers from corner kicks taken
by Sergio Garcia, but the defender beat him on his
third try after Garcia found Moreno unmarked at the
near post in the 78th minute.
Espanyol s Victor Alvarez saw a direct red for
fouling Youssef El Arabi from behind with only the
goalie to beat in the 29th.
But the hosts mustered more scoring chances
through Garcia s playmaking and stayed firm in
defense, except for El Arabi s shot off the crossbar
in the 61st.
Espanyol provisionally moved into eighth place.
PARIS---Saint-Etienne missed the chance to keep
the pressure on Lille in their battle for third place
when it was held to a 0-0 draw away to Toulouse
Although the point moves Saint-Etienne provi-
sionally above Lille on goal difference, Lille can move
three points ahead by beating relegation battlers
Sochaux at home in Saturday s matches.
In a dull game of few chances, winger Franck
Tabanou found himself in a good position in the 52nd
minute, but his shot lacked power and Toulouse goal-
keeper Zacharie Boucher saved comfortably, and
Saint-Etienne goalie Stephane Ruffier dived to keep
out midfielder Oscar Trejo s shot from midway
through the second half.
League leader Paris Saint-Germain can move eight
points clear at the top if it wins at second-place
Monaco tomorrow. (AP)
BERLIN---Son Heung-min s second half
strike was enough for Bayer Leverkusen
to win 1-0 at Borussia Moenchengladbach
and consolidate second place in the Bun-
Son scored in the 62nd minute, when he
let fly from outside the penalty area to send
the ball inside the top right corner. Three
Gladbach defenders failed to close down
the South Korean.
"There weren t many goal chances. The
game was going to be decided on a mistake
and unfortunately we made it,"
Moenchengladbach captain Martin Stranzl
Max Kruse was denied an equaliser by
Bernd Leno in the 77th, three minutes before
the Leverkusen keeper kept out another
attempt by Juan Arango.
Two Leverkusen substitutes, one in each
half, were booked for slowing down play.
"There s still room for improvement,"
Leverkusen captain Simon Rolfes said.
"Other teams will get better as well."
Leverkusen was 10 points behind league
leader Bayern Munich before the rest of the
weekend s games, while Moenchengladbach
remained provisionally fifth after its third
defeat in a row since the winter break.
"It s a pity. A scoreless draw would have
been fair," said Moenchengladbach coach
Lucien Favre, whose side hasn t won in five
matches. "We have one or two things to
correct. We ll see. I have to turn it around."

MUNICH---Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery
has been ruled out of the Bundesliga derby at
Nuremberg today after undergoing surgery on a
burst blood vessel in his buttock.
Bayern says on its website the minor operation
became necessary at short notice on Thursday
"because bruising associated with the damage was
affecting a nerve."
Ribery will remain in hospital until tomorrow, with
medics carrying out an examination the following
day to determine the length of his layoff.
Bayern plays Arsenal in the first leg of their Cham-
pions League round-of-16 tie on February 19.
Bayern coach Pep Guardiola says, "Hopefully he ll
be able to play in London."
Ribery has scored 60 goals and set up 88 more in
170 Bundesliga matches for Bayern since joining the
club in 2007. (AP)
