I arrive at the TTSPCA Tobago branch to pick
up the puppy I ve decided to adopt. She is a "Toba-
go Terrier" (aka "pothong"), about two-and-a-
half months old, all white, with a few light brown
dots, like markings on dice, on both of her ears.
Her black nose is heart-shaped---a fitting symbol,
since I m naming her Venus, after the Roman
Goddess of Love and Beauty.
Her gentle, warm temperament reminds me of
Cindy, the golden Labrador Retriever I had received
as a puppy on my first birthday. Cindy, a loyal
canine companion until her death at the age of
fourteen, would accompany me and my sisters
every day to the primary school we attended close
to home in Trinidad.
Fortunately we had a Principal who loved animals.
At school, Cindy would mingle easily
with children and teachers as "one
of us", sleep under our desks during
class and join us at break and
lunchtime in the playing field or sand
pit. A gentle soul, she was loved by

At our various stops in Crown Point
and environs, she meets friends and
acquaintances, all of whom instantly move
forward to touch her with delighted excla-
mations. "I love her!" many say. I think
of King Midas, who turned everything he
touched to gold. Now, here is this little white dog
with her Venus Touch, turning everyone to Love.
The next day we take an early morning beach
walk, enjoying clear, gently lapping waters and a
variety of seaside poems.
What are seaside poems? A friend once told me:
when walking a dog and it stops to sniff at some-
thing, never pull it away or hurry it along. To the
dog, smelling the object of focus is like burying its
nose into a book and reading a really good poem.
So, on our walk, Venus enjoys an eclectic Pigeon
Dead-eye fish heads,
brittle crab legs,
chicken bones ...
Afterwards, at the gas station, the female pump
attendant sees Venus sitting on a towel on the pas-
senger seat and asks me: "That s your pet?"
"Yes," I say. "I adopted her yesterday from the
The pump attendant turns out to be an animal
lover with two dogs. Her face lights up as she talks
about them, but falls when she tells me that she
doesn t like keeping them tied. But, she explains,
she has to...so they don t get poisoned like the
beloved canine she found
dead and frothing under
her house one day.
Maybe "Beware of the
dog" signs need to say
"Beware of the human."
A friend of mine who is
petrified of dogs has

The way people warm
up and smile when they
see "Veen" makes me think
of how, in some countries,
animal assistance therapy
programmes are offered, to
help improve health and
enrich the lives of children,
the elderly, women in shelters, hospital patients.
Even in some prisons, dog training is used as a
form of rehabilitation.
It would be great to have more of the Venus
Touch in our society.
