I met Crystal Wright last year when
she came as the guest speaker for the in-
augural Power of Beauty seminar. The
statuesque beauty with the down to
earth, friendly disposition is a motiva-
tional speaker, self-help author and edu-
cator known as the Empowerment Diva
for her ability to get people “unstuck”.
A woman that Power of Beauty founder,
Nina Alcantara, admired after attending
her seminars in the US, Wright was invited
to talk to a roomful of hairdressers,
makeup artistes, photographers, designers
and stylists, who eagerly hung to her every
word as she imparted useful advice on net-
working, seeking out clients and generally
building a successful business in the
“If you are passionate without business
sense it won’t be long before you are back
in your old job,” she told me when we met
that Sunday morning at the Hyatt Re-
gency. From choosing the right name for
your business to marketing your enter-
prise, Wright gives advice on everything.
A former agent who negotiated deals for
beauty pros who worked in print, video, film
and TV, Wright said many of them weren’t
professional, weren’t ready to build a busi-
ness and just did not know what to do.
“The same thing that applies to the rest of
us applies to make up artists. You can’t just
open up and you have no reviews. You need
a portfolio, that’s your review,” she advised.
The author of the beauty industry’s bible:
The Hair, Makeup & Fashion Styling Career
Guide, Wright acknowledged that fear is
the main factor that holds people back
from making their businesses successful.
“They are afraid of their own shadows,
they sabotage themselves,” she said, not-
ing that the best way to alleviate fear is by
doing your research.
“If you are going to an event, do your re-
search, know who will be there so you can
speak to them,” she said.
Research also means knowing the indus-
try you work in and familiarising yourself
with the clients you want to work with.
“People don’t know who to call but it’s
not the who but the title that is important
since people change all the time,” said
Wright. She also advised that beauty pro-
fessionals use social media to get their
company’s name out there.
“You need a personal page and a busi-
ness page, you can’t use one page for
Much of Wright’s advice comes from her
own personal experiences.
“I’ve made all the mistakes honey. I’ve
done it all wrong and fixed it,” she said, cit-
ing the example of a magazine that she ti-
tled Just Hold as one of those errors.
“You learn the power of a name. If it
doesn’t help you it’s dumb.”
Wright, who also authored 30 Days at
100 Percent, said in business you have to
be 100 percent professional and good cus-
tomer service is vital to everyone you inter-
“How much money are you leaving on
the table because you treated someone
badly?” she asked.
Wright, who counts as her clients Sam
Fine (Makeup Artist to Queen Latifah and
other top celebrities) and has also been re-
sponsible for teaching the MAC Cosmetics
Master Classes for senior international
artists in the USA and Canada, will return
to Trinidad next week as the feature
speaker for the second installment of The
Power of Beauty.
This year, the seminar will take place
over two days and the second day titled
The Art of Beauty, will zero in on technical
skills in hair and makeup, as well as portfo-
lio reviews. The Art of Beauty will feature
lectures and demonstrations from industry
trailblazers such as celebrity Makeup
Artist, Monifa Mortis and Emmy Award-
winning Hair Stylist, Antwon Jackson.
As an added bonus and to deliver unsur-
passed value to participants, there will be a
follow-up conference call with Crystal
Wright on August 18, 2014, so that all par-
ticipants can discuss their professional
progress and address any obstacles.

This Sunday, Body NV Distributors
(BNVD) will host its first annual national
Hair Affair, at the 1st Trinidad Sea Scout
House, Western Main Road, Cocorite, fea-
turing De Fabulous certified hair profession-
als from the US and the Caribbean. Local
distributor and one of the coordinators of
the event, Nicole Aleong, says the hair show
will showcase several smoothing and revi-
talizing hair treatments from the popular De
Fabulous brand, including: Amazon Series
Remedy, Amazon Series Cysteine Complex,
Amazon Series Restore (formerly Kerafu-
sion), De Fabulous Hair Beautox, De Fabu-
lous Reviver Treatment and De Fabulous
Get Closer Treatment.
Aleong says about 45 hairdressers certified
with BNVD are expected to attend the event
which begins at 8am. The hair affair, she says,
will provide a platform for the hairdressers to
interact with the manufacturers of the prod-
ucts, share experiences and learn more about
the technical make up of the hair treatments
to better serve their clients. At the hair show,
BNVD will also launch its very own colour line
from Italy called Silky Colours which will be
made available to local hairdressers.
“This Italian line has excellent grey coverage
and longevity. In the very competitive market-
space of hair colours, Silky Colours will give our
business partners a quality edge,” she said.
Models with varied hair types will be on hand
to demonstrate both the De Fabulous line as
well as the new Silky colours.
“Trinidad is so diverse and that’s why we have
treatments for every type of hair, from the
straightest to the tightest curl,” Aleong said.
Aleong says the De Fabulous treatments do
wonders for all hair types and can last be-
tween three to six months. The treatments
can be purchased at certified salons through-
out the country.
