The answer. Walking along the
beach in Tobago, I asked a question
and said to the Universe: "If the answer
is yes, let me find a heart-shaped
stone." Within less than ten minutes
I had found nine.
That is the status update I wrote after
asking the Universe about my out-of-
the-blue gut feeling to move to Tobago.
Below are selected Facebook status
updates written after I moved here on

Whether they really mean it or are
just very well trained isn t the point. It
feels great to be told, "Have a wonderful
day" after doing a transaction ... to have
an establishment s guard come up to
me and ask "Are you waiting?" before
ushering me in a chivalrous manner
toward the counter to be swiftly and
pleasantly served ... to be told, "You
have a beautiful rest of the day," as I
leave a building...to be brightly smiled
at by an employee in such a way that
Colgate would want to use her in one
of their ads.

Just now, driving home from town
along the coast, a wind blew from the
sea just as I passed under a big tree
hanging over the road. Hundreds of
yellow leaves showered down on my
vehicle and I got the sensation of some-
one tickling me all through my body.

Today at children s yoga, one of the
little girls pointed to one of the boys
and whispered to me: "He cute, eh?"
Later, as we walked outside, she whis-
pered to me again: "But Miss, he tell
me he like another girl in school."
Me: "That bothers you?"
Me: "He knows you like him?"
Her: "Yes, Miss. I give him three mar-

In the mall, suddenly heard a deep,
resonant "Ooooooooom" strike up, as

This afternoon at the gas station, the
pump attendant asked me if I wanted
a fish. I noticed a freshly caught fish
in an opaque bag on the top of the
pump. The man who was filling up
before me (a fisherman) had given it to
the pump attendant, who was now giv-
ing it to me. Lovely gift.

Saw a girl standing at the corner of
Shirvan Road. She had on rubber slip-
pers, an old scarf on her head and what
people in T&T call a "house dress."
Her face was so striking---such
intense, unique and chiselled features---
I immediately thought of those stories
where some fashion photographer from
Milan sees an unknown girl and wants
to take her photo and next thing she s
on a runway in Italy or Paris or on the
cover of Vogue. The combo of wind
blowing the old scarf and her face under
it was like a Bedouin in the desert.
