SHA'BAN 1435 A.H.
Virtues and Events of the Month:
Sha'ban is the eight (8th.) month of the Islamic Calendar and it's meaning is consecutively
escalating (undisturbed increase). Derived from the word "shu'ba"- which means "branch". The
Arabs used to branch out during this month to look for water.
With the arrival of the Sha'ban moon numerous blessings are showered upon us. Just as
the initiation of rainfall begins with "pitter patter" such blessings reach us in the same
accord and fashion.
With the beginning of Sha'ban blessings are initiated which progressively escalate so that
by mid-Sha'ban the blessings have reached a considerable amount and finally such blessings
reach their peak by the end of Ramadan.
Just as a farmer prepares for a fruitful harvest by harrowing his acreage so that the soil may readily
retain water, in contrast our souls are geared by the presence of such blessings in Sha'ban
effectively preparing us for a fruitful and completely advantageous Ramadan. Our Holy Prophet
(uwbp) has said, "Sha'ban is my month and Ramadan the month of Allah Ta'aalaa." (Daylami)
"Laila-tul Baraa'at (Night of forgiveness) is the fifteenth(15th) night of Sha'ban.
"Qibla"- the direction to be adopted within salaah was reverted back to the "Ka'aba" in Makkah
(after being coverted to Baitul Muqaddas in Jerusalem for a short period of time). This took
place two years after the Hijraah on the 15th of Sha'ban.
3. Fasting in the blessed month of Ramadan was made compulsory in the year 2 A.H. on the 25th
4. In the third (3rd.) A.H. Hadhrat Hafsa (R.A) was joined in matrimony with the Holy Prophet
5. In this very month forty two (42) years later Hadhrat Hafsa (R.A) took leave from this world.
6. The birth of the Holy Prophet's (uwbp) grandson Hadhrat Hussain (R.A.) took place, four years
on the fifth (5th.) of Sha'ban.
7. The battle of Banu Mustaliq took place in Sha'ban.
8. During the above mentioned battle, the "Aayah of Tayammum" (Purifying with sand before
salaah) was revealed in the year 5 A.H.
9. The daughter of the beloved Prophet (uwbp) Umme Kulthum (R.A.) took leave from this world
in the year 9 A.H.

Iwant to posit that there is
an opportunity for
Caribbean countries to be major
players in global politics instead
of the Caribbean being a pawn
like what happened in the cold
war. Jamaica, Guyana and
Grenada are three countries in
Caricom which had social tur-
moil as "spinoff" from the cold
During the cold war, the
United States, Europe and
Canada saw it necessary to give
incentives to Caribbean coun-
tries to side with the west and
not the Soviet Union: four Lome
Conventions since 1975; 1983 US
Caribbean Basin Initiative; and
1986 Caribbean and Canada
Trade Agreement were attempts
at US, Canada and Europe lend-
ing support for the Caribbean to
prevent the Soviet Union influ-
encing the region.
Since the cold war has ended,
all those supports are non-exis-
tent. However, the Caribbean
has not adapted to this global
reality and the islands have all
significantly increased their debt
to cope with their financial obli-
gations with much increase in
unemployment and crime.
Through Caricom a policy and
philosophy must be developed
on how to deal with the pull of
these large economies. Large
economies and countries have
always been influencing the
policies of countries in the
Caribbean through trade and
Having a ratified international
policy that supports the rule of
law and international treaties,
will set an international prece-
dence never before seen in
geopolitics. If you look at world
history, large powers plan and
later pull in their smaller allies.
We in the Caribbean must set
out clear policies that will be
beneficial to us and any interna-
tional partners. Any country
wanting our support must be
conversant with our internation-
Caricom must become proac-
tive instead of reactive and this
will make the 15 territories lead-
ers in geopolitics instead of
pawns. Countries cannot wait
until the problems in Ukraine or
the South China Sea heat up
before we develop a policy or
we will become pawns.
As the African proverb says
"when the elephants fight the
grass gets trampled". We in the
Caribbean must make sure we
strategically manoeuvre the ele-
phants so that they do not
trample on us during their fight
because the Caribbean is not
fertile soil for which the grass
they will trample on, will flour-
ish. Our defence is a diplomatic

best way to give directions to others. It
would be difficult though now that the
