The Appearance Of
Sat Guru Kabir Sahib
KABIR JAYANTI 2014
KABIR JAYANTI 2014
KABIR JAYANTI 2014 marks the celebration of the Anniversary of the Advent of Sat
Guru Kabir Saheb to our world. On this auspicious occasion, as the Dharmachariya
of the Kabir Panth Association of Trinidad and Tobago Inc.1932, I extend warm greet-
ings and Saheb's blessings to you. This year I have decided to enlighten you on some
of the Teachings of Saheb as they relate to MAAYA, that primordial, divine source of
Ramaini 1 of the Bijak of Kabir, we read of the origin of MAAYA
Antar jyoti shabd eka naaree; Hari Bramhaa taakkay tripuraaree..
Meaning: In the beginning, there was GOD. He was the WORD and LIGHT and with
him was the Creative Power from whom came the Gods -- Bramhaa, Vishnu and
Shiva. That Creative Power is the MAAYA of God and all came from Her.
From the "Gyaan Gudari"of Kabir we read:
"Alakh Purush jab kiyaa vichaaraa; Lakh chowraasee dhaagaa daaraa;
Teen gunana say taadhee keehee"
Meaning: When the Invisible Lord decided to create the world he cast forth 8.4 mil-
lion threads (species of lives), using the five (5) gross elements and He wove the
qualities of the body and placed them in three inherent qualities (3 gunas).
Taamay Jeeva Brahm ow maya; Aisaa samarath khela banaayaa
Jeewan paach pacheeso laagay; Kaam krodh moka paagay.
Meaning: Then the Omnipotent God made a peculiar Game of inserting therein, the
hidden Secret of MAAYA, BRAHM and JEEVA -- all divine entities. When the souls
(Jeevas) fell to the attraction of the 5 elements, the 25 sense pleasures and the 3
gunas, they were caught in the traps of lust, anger, affection and pride.
From the above, we see that MAAYA is a part of us. The game is for us Jeevas, to be
influenced by MAYA -- the force of illusion or by BRAHM - the force to take us back to
In the following.. Shabd (8) of the Bijak of Kabir, we note the instructions of Kabir
Saheb as follows:
Santo aawat jaaye so Maaya; Hai pratipaal kaal nahi vakay
Naa kahu gayaa na aayaa.
Kaa maksood machh kachh na ho-ee; Shankhaa sur na samhaaraa
Hai dayaala droha nahi vaakay; Kahahu kown ko maaraa.
Vai kartaa nahi baraaha kahaayay; Dharni dharyo nahi bhaaraa
Ee saba kaam Saheb kay naahi; Jhoot kahai sansaaraa.
Khambh phori jo baahar ho-ee; Taahoo pati jay sab ko-ee
Baawan roop na bali ko jaachay; Jo jaachay so maya.
Binaa vivek sakal jag bharme; maaya jag bharmaayaa
Parshuram kshatree nahin maraay; Ee chal maaya keehnaa
Satguru bhed khakti nahin jaanay; Jeewahi mithyaa deenhaa
Sirjanhaar na byaahee Sita, Jal pakshaan nahin bandhaa
Vai Raghunath ek kai sumirai; Jo sumirai so andhaa
Gopee gwaal na gokul aayaa, kartay kans na maaraa.
Hai meharbaan sabahin ko Saheb, nahi jeetaa nahi haaraa
Vai kartaa nahin bowdh kahaaye; nahi asur samhaaraa.
Gyaan hina kartaa kay bharmay; maayaa jag bharmaaya
Vai kartaa nahin bhayee nikalankee, nahin kallingahi maaraa.
Ee chal bal sab maayaa keenhaa; jatt satt taaraa,
Das autaar Ishwari maayaa; kartaa kai jin poojaaKahahi Kabir suno ho santo;
Upjay khapai so doojaa.
Meaning: O Saints, that which comes and goes is Maaya. God is the sustainer of all
and is not affected by Time. He neither goes nor comes from anywhere.
In the above verses of the Shabd, Saheb goes on to ask .... Of what purpose did he
have to appear as a fish or tortoise, or to kill the demon Shankhasur? He is all-mer-
ciful and has no enmity. He states that the Creator never incarnated as a boar to hold
up the earth nor did He make anyone do it. These are not the work of God. The
world tells lies.
Kabir establishes that everyone believes that He tore the pillar and emerged as
Narsingh's form. They also believe that He tore the abdomen of Hiranyakash wish
His nails, but God, the Creator does not do such things. Saheb says that He who
incarnated as a dwarf did not beg King Bali. He who begged was Maaya. Without
spiritual discrimination the whole world is in doubt, perpetuated by Maaya.
God did not come as Parsuram to kill the Kshatriyas that was the deception of
Maayaa. Kabir establishes that without the knowledge of the SatGuru and devotions
to Him, people accept Maaya as the Truth.
Kabir Saheb continues to establish in the Ramaini that the Creator did not marry Sita
nor made the stones float, nor made a bridge across the ocean. He did not come as
Krishna to kill Kans, nor did He come as Buddha and killed the demons. He will not
come as Kalki to destroy Kalinga. These are all deceptions of Maaya. The ten (10)
incarnations are the Maaya of God. They may be worshipped but not as the True
Those who are born and die are other than the Imperishable Lord who is beyond
In Ramaini 9 of The Bijak of Kabir entitled "Maaaya maha thagani ham jaanee", He
explains the great power of Illusion - Maaya, saying that Maaya has bound the Soul
with 8 sufferings -- ignorance, ego, attachment, aversions, the fear of death and the 3
gunas (qualities), the nine (9) threads, five (5) senses, mind, intellect, consciousness
She (Maaya) has bound "YAMA" (God of Death) and her sons (humans) and all cre-
ation. She has bound the 330 million deities. Kabir Saheb assures us that by wor-
shipping the True God, one's iron shackles are broken. Some attain Turiya, but most
people worship God without true knowledge.
In the Saakhi -- Couplet, Saheb says that one, desiring the fruits of actions in devo-
tions become victims of bondage (Maayaa) but the devotee who recollects the True
God day and night he/she will attain liberation.
In other compositions of the Bijak of Kabir, Saheb describes Maaya as 'Beli' or creep-
er that spreads her stems/tentacles over all - Gods, Saints and man. She is respon-
sible for the establishment of the 'Dwands'.. pairs of opposites in the world.
Guru Kabir says there is hope for Salvation, one must do devotions to the Lord, per-
form actions without desires of rewards and must try to gain knowledge as imparted
by the Sat Guru. The devotee must do Naam Sumiran - the recollection of the Name
of God and live according to the precepts of the Lord.
In conclusion, I want to recall the beginning of my message. In our body the Creator
placed the three (3) Attributes of Himself - MAAYA, JEEV and BRAHM. We as
Jeevas, have to play the 'game'. Now that I have tried to enlighten you on MAAYA,
let us approach the celebration of Kabir Jayanti 2014, and be part of 'game', develop-
ing BRAHM in our existence and be liberated souls. Happy Kabir Jayanti Greetings
to one and all.
