Solution to Friday's puzzle
The word may sound familiar, but do you know
what it means?
Complete the grid so that every row, column and 3 x 3 box contains every digit from 1 to 9 inclusively.
There are few guarantees in poker, but this
one is a cinch. If you play in a tournament
and don t bust out early due to your own stu-
pidity, you definitely will see something that
you ve never seen before. You will see crazy
draw-outs. Two-outers that hit on the river.
You will see A-K lose to A-10.
Here s how the action unfolded:
Robert Notkin, an online qualifier who won
a seat for $30, picked up pocket kings under the
gun with blinds at $100,000/$200,000. He bet
$600,000 as the chip leader of the tournament.
Justin Miller, sitting to Notkin s immediate
left, had only an additional $75,000, so he shoved
with his Ks-Qh. He was hoping that Notkin
was holding a pair smaller than queens and was
in a coin-flip situation
Then Vincent Jacques picked the wrong time
to attempt to shut down the pot and isolate
Miller. Holding the second-largest stack, he
quickly re-raised all-in, to $7.49 million.
There was now more than $8.5 million in the
pot, and Ryan Rivers was last to act, with 8c-
8h. Holding the second smallest of the four
stacks, he was in a bit of a pickle.
Rivers could have folded, and probably would
have watched at least one other player get elim-
inated and then he d have moved up the pay
structure. With that much action ahead of him,
there was zero chance that he held the best
"I m pretty sure that Rivers is folding," said
online streaming commentator James Hartigan
(the hand can be seen on YouTube). "It s not
the case of Miller shoving, it s that Jacques has
shoved over the top of him."
Or he could have called, hoping to get a little
lucky, and quadruple his stack and be in ripe
position to charge for the tournament win.
After a few minutes of tanking, that was
exactly what he did, creating a nightmare sit-
uation for the dealer with a $2.8 million main
pot, a $1.725 million side pot and a second side
pot of $12.48 million between Jacques and Notkin
after his obvious snap call with his kings, the
second-best starting hand in Texas Hold em.
Notkin had an immediate sweat of five cards --
the three remaining aces in the deck, which gave
Jacques a higher pair, and the two eights that
filled a set for Rivers.
The flop came down an innocent 3h-7d-Js,
making Notkin a 75 per cent favourite with two
cards to come. The turn was the 7h, and the
river was blank 5c.
After Notkin earned his winning share of
$335,935, the remaining places were paid accord-
ing to chip strength when the hand started.
"What a ridiculous hand," Hartigan said.
