Home' Trinidad and Tobago Guardian : July 10th 2014 Contents As a young boy growing up in
Trinidad, it was easy to fall onto
the Brazil bandwagon. Everybody in
my early days loved and wanted to
be Zico, and worse yet for me, I
went to Fatima College and we
wore yellow on the football field.
Everybody I knew in school loved
Samba and Brazeeel! 1974, 1978 and
1982 were disappointing World
Cups for me as my beloved Brazil
did very little to live up to their
To the astonishment of my
friends and family I dropped Brazil
an 1986 and threw my full support
behind Michel Platini and France.
They were exciting and full of flair,
and I have been a supporter of Le
Bleu ever since.
1998 was an amazing World Cup
for me as we beat my former team
Brazil 3--0 in the final. Although
Brazil won the World Cups in 1994
and 2002, I felt little regret. To me
Zidane was the greatest since
Maradona. I was mesmerised by
Maradona but could never back
Argentina as they wore CIC colours.
What happened in the World Cup
semifinal against Germany was fur-
ther justification of my decision 28
years ago. Tuesday s result goes
beyond embarrassing for Brazilian
football, it truly marks the death of
Samba as we know it.
I feel for Pele, Ronaldo and even
the memory of Socrates. What hap-
pened in Belo Horizonte Tuesday
erodes and tarnishes the legendary
status with which Brazilian football
is held. In my memory that is the
most humiliating defeat in sport
that I have ever witnessed.
I thank God everyday in life, but
he really guided me in 1986 when I
let go of Brazil. He knew in years to
come I could not take the pressure
of supporting two humiliating

BRAZIL DEFEAT THE
DEATH OF SAMBA
The payout of millions of taxpayers
dollars to settle a private corporate debt
is cheap politics which capitalises on the
misfortune or tragedy of others.
I say it is cheap politics because the
Prime Minister must have been aware
that Jack Warner had reneged on the
promise of a financial reward to the Soca
Warriors but she still had him in her Cab-
Not once did she ever question his in-
tegrity, his ethics and his FIFA dealings,
until she was forced to; until it was politi-
cally expedient to so do. So this publicity
stunt is simply calculated to score politi-
cal points or to settle a score against
Someone in another place has raised
the issue as to why the Soca Warriors
were rewarded for a botched job but I
will not go there because I do feel sorry
for them being hoodwinked.
Make no bones about it, I hold no brief
for Jack Warner, by the same token let
us not get carried away with the Prime
Minister's largess and confuse it with the
right thing to do or even good politics.
The politics played here is cheap poli-
tics. No sleight of hand by the Prime
Minister will obfuscate her role in this
whole sordid mess called the PP govern-
ment where today's friend is tomorrow's
enemy and political expediency is the
name of the game.

system to save lives
Licensing officers aren't doing
their jobs right. The need for traffic
wardens has come about owing to
poor screening on the part licens-
Think about what they screen.
They test the physical ability of
people to manoeuvre vehicles.
Think about what causes acci-
dents---accidents are caused by the
mental inability of drivers to con-
form to driving regulations.
Testing of conformity to driving
regulations is weak. Drivers fake
understanding road regulations to
get licenses. Licensing officers
hardly notice these fakes. After
new drivers get licenses from fak-
ing conformity to the regulations
they switch to driving habits that
run counter to regulations.
If they were taught regulations
at a young age, if they were exam-
ined more thoroughly, if they were
given conditional driver's licenses
by the licensing department, gradu-
ating in stages to a full-fledged li-
cense, road regulation
infringements would drop. Licens-
ing officers have to change the sys-
The first license would be a pre-
liminary vehicle operation license.
The second a three-year condi-
tional regulation conformity license
to reinforce conformity to road reg-
ulations. So the new driver would
need an experienced coach driver
with him to operate a vehicle.
After three years of safe driving
the driver graduates to senior-dri-
ver status. He can now drive with-
out a coach. This cumbersome
system would save lives.
It is all part of the game
