Opposition MP Marlene McDonald
has called for a police investigation
into allegations that the Life Sport
programme had been funding criminal
She made the call on Tuesday night
during Tuesday night s public meeting
in Massy Stores carpark, St Augustine.
The call followed a statement by
Sport Minister Anil Roberts that he
would resign if the audit being done
by the Ministry of Finance revealed
that the Life Sport programme, which
was formerly under his ministry, was
McDonald said Roberts was attempt-
ing to fool the public.
"The responsibility of the Ministry
of Finance is to unearth financial irreg-
ularities. A police investigation is
required in order to unearth criminality
in Life Sport," McDonald said.
Life Sport first came under public
scrutiny early last month when it was
revealed that criminals were benefitting
The programme, which began in 2012
and started with a budget of $6 million,
increased to a budget of nearly $300
million by this year.
McDonald said Roberts was aware
the Finance Ministry would not be
looking for criminality.
"Don t be fooled by Minister Roberts
and his semantics. We the people of
T&T are not foolish.
"I call on the Prime Minister tonight
to conduct a criminal investigation so
that any wrongdoing can be unearthed
and all perpetrators can be dealt with,"
McDonald also slammed Roberts for
"misleading the public" when he told
Parliament Life Sport had given schol-
arships to 25 students. Roberts made
the claim in responding to a motion of
censure raised by Opposition MP Colm
Imbert in the Parliament on June 27.
McDonald said a newspaper report
on Sunday revealed that no scholarships
had been paid for by the Life Sport

isters? And in the midst of this, not a
word from the Prime Minister," she
Accusing Roberts of misleading the
Parliament, McDonald said he should
be referred to the Privileges Committee
but added that with Parliament due to
be prorogued on August 2, any matter
being referred would lapse.
She then read out her own motion
of censure to the crowd: To censure
the Minister of Sport for misleading
the Parliament and the country and
calling for his resignation.
A resounding "Aye!" came from the
