Machel Cedenio, one of T&T's most promising
prospects for precious metal won his heat and
secured the fourth fastest time overall on the opening
day of the IAAF World Junior Championships, in
Eugene, Oregon, on Tuesday evening, to advance
to last evening's semifinal.
Cedenio, the world's fastest quarter-miler this year,
clocked 46.60 seconds for an easy berth into the 22-
man semifinal stage. The fastest runner in the heats
was Japan's Nobuya Kato, who blew away all com-
petition in 46.23 seconds. USA's Tyler Brown (46.45)
and Briton Jack Crosby (46.48) also produced faster
times in the heat.
Cedenio returned to action last evening after press
time seeking a spot in tonight's 400m final, which
was scheduled to run off at 10.45 pm (T&T time).
Ruebin Walters, who clocked 17th overall in the heats
of the men's 110m hurdles, clocking 13.76 seconds,
also contested the semi-final last evening ahead of
today's 10.35 pm final.
Meanwhile, T&T's Jonathan Farinha, Aaliyah Teles-
ford and Zakiya Denoon were also in action last
evening in their respective 100m semifinals. Farinha
qualified for the semifinals after placing eighth overall
in heats on the opening day in 10.37 seconds. USA's
Trayvon Bromell and Kendal Williams topped the
heats in 10.13 and 10.23 seconds, respectively.
Telesford (11.81) and Denoon (11.83) placed 24th
and 25th in the heats, which was led by Dina Asher-
Smith of Great Britain in 11.18 seconds.
The men and women's 100m finals were carded
to run off in last night's final two events.
Farinha will be back in action today when he lines
up in heat six of the 200m preliminaries. The semi-
finals will subsequently run off from 9.40 pm, a day
before the final, which is carded for 11.10 pm.
T&T's highly favoured 4x100m men and women's
relay teams will open their accounts on Thursday.
Captain of the Red Steel cricket team Dwayne
Bravo has gotten his wish and the franchise will
now be called T&T Red Steel.
Two weeks ago officials of the Caribbean Pre-
mier League (CPL) issued a release which stated
that minister of Sport in T&T, Anil Roberts had
asked that the name T&T be removed from the
franchise because this country was no franchise
but a sovereign nation.
Yesterday, minister of national security Gary
Griffith on a morning talk show said that the
team could use the name T&T Red Steel because
he, together with some other ministers had met
in caucus and decided that the name should stay
On Tuesday, Roberts questioned Griffith's role
in the entire issue and said that he would not be
taking seriously, a press release sent out by Digicel,
which indicated that the name will revert to T&T
Red Steel. Digicel, firstly sent out a release which
indicated that the name would be retained by the
Red Steel and they thanked Griffith for his input.
Later in the day they sent out another, thanking
the Prime Minister the Hon. Kamla Persad-Bisses-
sar for her input as well.
Checks by the T&T Guardian revealed that no
official release was sent out by the Office of the
Prime Minister on the move. Roberts had also
indicated that no decision was made at the cabinet
level and it was only there that the official decision
can be taken.
Sources close to the situation told the T&T
Guardian that the matter was discussed by a num-
ber of high ranking government officials and they
have decided to allow Red Steel to retain the name
T&T Red Steel.
