TORONTO---Top-ranked tennis player
Novak Djokovic edged Gael Monfils 6-
2, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (2) yesterday in the sec-
ond round of the Rogers Cup.
After a lopsided tiebreaker, Djokovic
fist-pumped and yelled at the end of
the match that lasted two hours, 40
Andy Murray had little trouble win-
ning his opener, defeating 19-year-old
Australian Nick Kyrgios 6-2, 6-2 in the
first match of the day on center court.
"He outclassed me, he did everything
better than me," said Kyrgios, who upset
Rafael Nadal to reach the Wimbledon
quarterfinals. Murray, the 2013 Wim-
bledon champion who had back surgery
last autumn, was pleased with the
match. "I thought I did most things like
pretty solid," the Scot said. "I didn t
make too many errors. I moved well,
(had a) high first-serve percentage."
Murray will face either Ivo Kalovic or
Richard Gasquet in the next round. Mur-
ray could play Djokovic in the quarter-
finals. "It s a tough draw, but it s also
good to play against someone like a
Novak if you get that opportunity in the
buildup to the US Open," Murray said.
"You really see where your game is at."
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga beat fellow French-
man Jeremy Chardy 7-6 (4), 6-4 to set
up a match with Djokovic.
Milos Raonic was to face American
Jack Sock later yesterday.
Last week, Nadal withdrew from tour-
naments in Toronto and Cincinnati
because of a right wrist injury. (AP)

MONTREAL---It was a day of unex-
pected absences at the Rogers Cup on
Tuesday night: Andrea Petkovic failed
to make her match, Svetlana
Kuznetsova pulled out injured, the
power went out, and so too did an
inconsistent Eugenie Bouchard.
Amid the surprising run of events,
there were some predictable outcomes.
Third-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska
won through to the second round with
a 7-5, 7-5 win over Barbara Zahlavova
Strycova, while Ana Ivanovic and Car-
olina Wozniacki both breezed through.
Ivanovic beat Timea Bacsinszky 6-
1, 6-2 while Wozniacki was much too
good for veteran Daniel Hantuchova,
winning 6-1, 6-1. Radwanska s next
opponent will be Madison Keys, who
progressed when Kuznetsova retired
when trailing 6-1, 3-2.
Ivanovic will next face Coco Van-
derweghe, who beat Shuai Zhang 6-
2, 6-4 while Wozniacki will meet Klara
Koukalova. The main upset of the day
was the elimination of local favorite
Bouchard by young American Shelby
Rogers, 6-0, 2-6, 6-0 in a second-
Bouchard, who had not played since
reaching the Wimbledon final last
month, was clearly out of touch, holding
serve only twice in the match.
Rogers, who has beaten Bouchard
both times they have played, will face
the winner of the Wozniacki-Koukalova
Petkovic pulled out with a viral infec-
tion, and her place was taken in the
draw by lucky loser Elena Vesnina, who
beat Camila Giorgi 6-4, 1-6, 6-1. Ves-
nina is in the same eighth of the draw
as second seed Elena Vesnina, who had
a first-round bye and will being her
