Coco Velvet International Fashion
Management will host Makin' Style
2014 at the National Academy for
the Performing Arts NAPA Port-of-
Spain on September 11. Makin'
Style 2014 will include Coco Velvet's
Fashion Workshop 2014 graduation
presentation show, Top Model 2014
Competition and the grande finale
of the Stitch to Market Styleweek
The CVI Fashion Workshop 2014
was jointly hosted by the Ministry of
the Arts and Multiculturalism. The
workshop's main objective is to fos-
ter and develop a spirit of entrepre-
neurship among its participants and
the arts ministry hopes to facilitate
the transference of cultural inheri-
tance while equipping participants
with the skill set to manage either
their own or other artistic businesses.
Coco Velvet's workshop facilitators
will help participants to discover and
develop their creative and technical
skills with the hope that they will be
able to transform these natural tal-
ents and abilities into lucrative ca-
reers in the Creative Sector.
Ninety-two youth, ages 13 - 25
years participated in this year's work-
shop which was hosted from June 15,
at NALIS Port-of-Spain. Participants
included models, fashion photogra-
phers, stylists, production event co-
ordinators and designers. Fifteen
new designers took part in the Stitch
to Market: Introduction to Fashion &
Design Technology Workshop. They
were exposed to the fundamentals of
the fashion industry and a Collections
Development Module facilitated by
CAFD @ UTT BFA in Fashion Design
graduates Sharon Christopher and
Lisa See Tai. The designers were
given a Styleweek Challenge to con-
ceptualize, design and construct six
to ten garments for the Resort wear
market. They were encouraged to in-
fuse subtle Caribbean flavour into
their design aesthetic to ensure that
the fabrication, use of colour and sil-
houettes were globally on trend and
commercially relevant but also ap-
peals to the aesthetics and utility
needs of the Caribbean market.
Workshop modules were designed to
cover all areas encountered in a pro-
fessional design studio including
fashion sketching, pattern drafting,
collections development, trends fore-
casting, textiles identification, apparel
construction, labeling and finishing.
A panel of fashion design experts
including Claudia Pegus -- President
of the Jury, Heather Jones, Meiling
and Yosan Fletcher, CEO Bang Bang
will select the top three collections at
Makin' Style 2014 for showcase at
the inaugural Caribbean Resort Style-
week Port-of-Spain. The Stitch to
Market Styleweek Challenge winner
will receive a Scotiabank challenge
trophy and a $20 000 Coco Velvet
